Been too lazy to switch back and forth to a VPN but if time warner sends me a letter after paying $150/mo to them for various services then they can gtfo, I'll switch to fios the day I get the letter, THEN use a VPN.

People on the internet shouldn't have to do this...

Wow, US ISP's willingly resorting to DPI... Never thought i'd see the day.

Telstra is currently trialling a system to throttle P2P traffic during peak times which requires minimal packet snuffing it just needs to identify the protocol, but even still people are finding it to be a breach of privacy... I can't imagine the uproar if they went in this deep :p

@ mcaso123 : Doesn't matter, the originating MAC address won't match a serial used by one of their devices so they'll know to look at neighboring houses.

Thanks for the info, although I have a USB that connects me to 3G internet, and I also have a satellite that can increase the range of picking up wireless. I also have a computer that's not connected to the internet, and can download files from my kindle fire. So I can just watch pirated material on that. Unless they can track down the kindle. I'm not a huge expert on this stuff. But it's most likley this will NOT go through, like sopa.

Not going to go through? Lul, Did you miss the part where it takes action next week? As in Monday ISPs will be putting it into place.
Also, if a device can connect to the internet in any way, shape or form it has a tracable ID, be it MAC or otherwise. If they want to find you, they'll find you.

Who knows, maybe google will start another petition to duck it over just like sopa.
Atleast I hope
but think of this as a comparsion to the canned spam act.
so yah, we don't really know what's going to happen.
The stuff I pirate are mainly movies from very early 2000s or before. So It's not like content creators are really gonna be like HEY.... HEY. DUN DL DIS. Because I'm pretty sure studio ghibli dosen't give too shits about me pirating nausicaa and the valley of the wind. It's the new poop that content creators go out for. I've gotten a warning from warner brothers once because I downloaded a cam rip of ted while it was in theaters. Besides that Warner dosen't give 2 shahoottillootsies about the other movies I download. So we'll see what happens. The way this seems to work is content creators report. So unless you do something hop on your butt cuz your pirating something really illegal there's most likley not a chance this will be much effect

One can hope.

I don't think this will really be that bad. Its probably more for scaring people and catching people who download large amounts of data to burn and sell. There is still a huge market for bootlegs.

Although they could just look at bandwidth usage... I mean really, this stuff is getting out of control lately. Soon everyone will be on Tor just to avoid getting put in jail for posting their opinion online. Oh wait, they'll probably then have restrictions on and charge you for encrypted internet traffic. Wouldn't surprise me.

/sigh

@Ron
To be honest everyones just money hungry, especially big buck industries. "Hollywood lost 6 billion to piracy", oh like you don't make that off all the freaking avengers poop you've sold hollywood. It's not like 6.5 billion is a giant cut in your profit. So what do they do, spend alot of effort in lawyers and court to realize they're totally in the wrong and already duck themselves over. So they take this hate and grief on everyone by enforcing stupid butt poop like this. Now kids who are young as me (14) getting sued for millions by major companies for watching a movie you can go see for 10 dollars, for free. Some people today are worthless piles of garbage with as much sympathy for fellow man as a snake to its prey.
Let me give you a personal experience that demonstrates such.
On December 21st, I was in math class.
The two usual jackasses who think the only reason to come to school is to duck around are doing their usual routine, kissing up to the teacher to make up for their lack of ability to even remotely care and senseless blabbering in the middle of the period. It was friday, a half day, I'm striving to leave this hole and start my winter break. Now everyones getting on my nerves on my worst day of the week so far. So I silently blurt out "Sometimes I want to kill you all". Half heartedly, with no violence or anger strictness at all, even sounded like I was joking. Nothing happens, the math teacher first said she was going to tell my count I said that but then sounded like she wouldn't. Ok then, just one little event. I stroll on and finally make it to my last period without fainting to the ground. Guess what, the security guards here! Oh boy. She of course, escorts me down to the office. There's a cop, and 4 teachers sitting there. The scum don't even know my name before they barrage my life down. Now you might think "you're whining because they're doing their job? witch.", which is very little the case. So, a cop records my height and name, and writes it down. THEN THEY SAY IT. I'm arrested, suspended for 10 days, requested a full psychiatric evaluation (that's around 50 hours of counseling in 2 weeks time on christmas. To find someone takes almost a month). Of course they understood that this wasn't possible, and I couldn't go back to school without doing so. I also have to go to court. So now I have a shenanigans arrest on my record, yipee! Then I have to get a lawyer ALSO on christmas. 400 dollars an hour. Only Dr who is able to evaluate me is 500 an hour and doesn't take insurance (neither does the lawyer!) Plus I have to buy a suit and stuff for court. What's even worse is that I didn't even need the lawyer. I am permitted to have no access to social networks (facebook.) and not able to go on 4chan whatsoever. My mother, a single mom (which they know about) can barley pay for my sisters growing tuition (40 thousand dollars a year!), and they then knowingly put this some 10 thousand dollars procedure which nearly made my father disown me and put me and my moms relationship to the last cornucopia. My father of course then go tells ALLLLLLLL of my family members about this event and now every single family friend is calling me to give me advice and such. Not to mention the fact they knew that I didn't really mean it, which I also told them. To this day it still affects me. Of course the social media part and such, but this has really all put my mothers budget down the drain. Because I'm not put on medication which is 140 dollars a month (after insurance is paid!). Now my sister probably won't be able to teach at my high school (the one she went too) because of this, it dropped my grades becuase I'm out for so long and have to teach this all myself with no way to even check it. Left alone every single day, 8 AM to 6 or 7 PM so my mom can make enough money to buy this shenanigans, and she's the only one who can tell me what I have to do and when is what. All because I said "sometimes I want to kill you all" softly and half heartedly. I just hope some people rot.
How and why I compared an anti piracy act to my every day life is beyond me, but I'm bored and why the duck not.
tl;dr: school made me fuss up 10 thousand dollars because ms conleys on meth (shes got that look in her eyes, and that sweat everywhere.)
Now I'm going to bed

$6.5 BILLION is a HUGE cut of their profits. But that's not the point. The point is how did they get that $6.5 Billion figure and the answer is by counting each & every download as a "lost sale".

In the real world, this simply makes no sense and has no actual correlation to anything. Someone who downloaded a movie once may have actually paid to see it in the cinema 3 times, yet they still consider that 1 download to be 1 person who downloaded it INSTEAD of paying money to see it at the cinema.

Just like how Assassins Creed was downloaded 11 times for every 1 copy which was sold. If this was in fact true and out of 12 people only 1 actually paid for it, Ubisoft would have gone bankrupt on the spot. It was downloaded that many times because a) it was leaked online several months in advance, & b) because the leaked version was not complete it had multiple bugs and several versions were released & people downloaded the same game multiple times before finally purchasing the game once it came out. This is why although it was a great success they still complain about how much it was pirated while still assuming each 1 of those downloads was in fact 1 lost sale. Which it isn't.

Yeah, and if you registered your Kindle you more than likely used your real information (inc. address) in the case of a replacement.

As for the Dongle (aka 3G "USB"), if you registered that (some you have to register here, like a SIM Mobile service provider) you can be tracked also.

That being said, they'd have to go through multiple contact processes.
