    Old news...

Go to the DNS checker. If you're green you have nothing to worry about.

Re: Internet Dooms day July 9th!

How do they expect people to follow these things when they talk shite?
malware called DNSChanger which allows them to control DNS servers.
Malware which did that would need to be installed on DNS servers. From what I read (ignoring the clear misinformation) it's control DNS settings or redirecting DNS requests. I know it's misinformation, because I know what they say it does isn't possible if the DNS servers aren't infected.

Personally, I run my own DNS server with caching and forwarding. The main reason is (| was) that my ISPs DNS servers take longer to look up IPs than to download webpages half the time. But having done that, it also means the classic "block domain names by etc\hosts" method of making sure nobody and no program goes to malware distributors (or annoying ad hosts) can be centralised. All systems on my LAN use my local cache, and it has a local domain name blacklist which points all those dodgy domains to 127.0.0.1. (or, actually, a ban page on my intranet web-server) I have a TLD for my LAN, and register systems with the local server within that TLD which means I don't have to rely on WINS, UP'n'P, LDAP or any such "auto config" rubbish. (closing ports, reducing system load and hardening security) And I can override popular MMO domains with the LAN IP of my local server emulator, so that I don't have to hack the lookup to an IP or file.

Another added advantage is that I can scan it's cache hit / miss logs to see which system on the LAN is looking up what domain, which will tell me what domains host certain resources. (what domain is a game looking for, annoying dynamic ads in programs fe., or updates you really don't want to get... because the licence changes, or functionality is actually reduced in newer versions etc.) If machines where looking up strange domains I would see it in the log, and if they weren't using the local DNS, I would see the lack of it, and fix them. ^_^

Shockingly, many people have no real understanding of what DNS is, how it works and why it's important. Even here, among people who spend considerable time trying to hack game clients to use local servers. Honestly, if it's just a DNS lookup, change your etc\hosts file or put up a local DNS forwarder with an override for that domain entry. XD (if it's an embedded fixed IP, there's often no other option but to hack it out ... sorry)

    --- EDIT ---
pro-tip: When looking to "release" a server which you normally redirect the DNS at system level to n00bs, if you can find the API the game calls to access DNS services (and most use a standard system API to cope with ISP / Corporate proxy settings) you can just write a proxy DLL which replaces the IP returned. (or inject an API override, if you prefer / find it easier)

As per usual not a lot happen. I've grown accustom to knowing these things never really happened. Just like but not as bad as the 2000 bug we were supposedly meant to have had and never did.
