Liquid Nitrogen, its the only cooling solution that can handle intense speeds/heat per square/mm that those things put out trying to overclock at intense speeds.. phase shift cooling wont handle it... and those type of overclocks cant be kept that way, they last as long as the nitrogen can keep them cool.. which isnt very long mind you as the copepr cores they custom make are usually only made to last about up to 30 minutes at a time per load of nitrogen.. it oxidizes too quickly to maintain anything permanent.

Still waiting. But I saw a 7+ ghz cpu that was stable enough to do superpi :p That's quite nice!

true but what if the person had a uber huge case made and had like 4 phase changers in the case 2 on bottom and 2 on top with a decent mount of modding it is possible

And with 4 phase changers, your more likely to run into an extreme blowout that would fry everything ;) Yeah, it may be possible.. but doing it for any means other then taking a screenshot and shutting it down isnt really viable.. at that point its cheaper to go Liquid Nitrogen for your overclock

well from what i read @ corsair labs is that the first componets to make the board fry is overheating mofsets (sp?) so maybe he nitrogen cooled all of them and his CPU

since the 500ghz CPU was made this is very real to me

You really should learn more before posting stupid thing...

Even with a quad cascade you'll only be able to get -130c. A liquid nitrogen run will give you about -170 or lower temps.

That's much different you see. And a CPU running at 8ghz will be producing so much heat that running phase change would be pointless.

Just think. You'll need about 10 compressors or more just to pull off a temp that low. And do you know how much power that'll draw? About 3kw! Not to mention the CPU it self would probably be drawing about 600w of power.

So running that for an hour is going to hurt your pocket book.

Not only that. Those speeds are not even stable and put so much stress on the components that most boards and CPUs die shortly after doing those speeds.

So it's not just the cooling of it is the factor of the time you can run it. It's also down to how long they parts themselves will last.

Please do some more research.

Depends on the CPU. =P

65nm Cellys and P4s can do 4-5ghz on air. Hell you can get 6ghz on a 65nm with air (with 0c room temps)/water. 7ghz is where you need a cascade to touch and high is the levels of dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

C2D's need cascades to hit the 4.5ghz mark stable and can hit 5ghz unstable while you need dry ice or liquid nitrogen to make it stable.

C2Q's will need cascades to do 4ghz stable and 5ghz is the territory of the dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

Yeah once you get into extreme overclocking dry ice and liquid nitrogen will be much cheaper. Spending $10 for 30 mins of extreme overclocking is much cheaper then spending $10k for a 10 compressor cascade and the $1/hour to run it.

Yes MOFESTs are the first to fry. They run about 90c on normal useage. So when you stress them with overclocking they will get well over 150c. Though when you cool the CPU down to -170c with liquid nitrogen. The MOFESTs do get cooled down to about -100c also as they are right next to the CPU and the hole area around there gets extremely cold. But the stress of having so much voltage and amps being pushed though the components well above the stated levels will fry the stuff in no time.

yea we over clocked a board in basic electronics the mofest got really hot and after it was cranked to high ( it was a P3) it just failed

nopeace do you have and idea on how the behemoth is cooled?

99% of the time MOFESTS are not actively cooled. So that's either nothing or just a heat sink/heat pipe.

They are designed for high heat tolerance so that is why they are not actively cooled as it doesn't matter in a non overclocked environment.

I suppose liquid helium (4.22K) would be even colder, but then again it's a bit on the expensive side. Anyway, with increasing voltage and current draw, electromigration becomes an issue. The limit is probably around 10GHz.

Yes liquid helium is better. You can get about a 10-20c difference when using it but that only equates to a 1% gain which isn't enough to spend the extra money to get.
