there doesn't seem to be any room. Can someone explain to me why in Ollydbg, I find this at the very end of the file?

You should be able to use the 00 data as an area in which you can codecave, I usually do my codecaves at the bottom too. If need be you can extend the file size by using something such as LordPE.
