You should not have skipped the basics and jump to animation/effects. Learn smudging first,its the best basic tutorials for signatures.

Also look up some information on rule-of-thirds, it can be used quite well in signatures, . Smudging and blending are your most powerful 'effect' tools, and some Dodge Tool in places, but also research some of the principles of using fonts.
