Something that was brought up to me, and I feel like playing a little devils advocate.

Is Transsexualism a mental disorder?

Info: Transsexualism is an individual's identification with a gender inconsistent or not culturally associated with their assigned sex.

Background: The debate has been brought up after a Transsexual person was denied to join Ms. Universe because his/her original sex was "male". The contestant was legally a female by Canadian standards because had genital reassignment surgery. The contestant was later allowed to participate due to pressure from LGBT groups and lobbies.

So have at it, is Transsexualism a mental disorder and should be treated with medication and therapy?


Further note: Body integrity identity disorder (A disorder where those effected want to sever their own limbs and feel they would be happier living as an amputee) is listed as a "severe mental illness" while transsexualism (which sometimes ends up with males/females mutilating their genitalia) is listed as a normal thing and should be "accepted."

I have been looking around and i found this, most Health experts agree that transsexualism isn't a mental disorder.

Transsexual people have long insisted theirs is a biological condition rather than a mental disorder, and it looks like the world’s top mental health experts may now agree.

Authors of the next version of the international psychological manual, the DSM-V, have proposed that gender identity disorder be replaced with the less stigmatic term, gender incongruence.

A document outlining a policy concerning transsexual people published by the UK Government in 2002 says: “It is not a mental illness. It is a condition considered in itself to be free of other pathology...”

I will be honest, transexuality is something that has disturbed me ever since I found out what it was. Guess its too far down the line, or 'extreme', for me. I mean, what sucks more than going up to this beautiful girl in a bar, taking her home, and having a heart attack when she takes off her pants.

May i ask what has this got to do with the topic, just because you believe your a unicorn doesnt make you one because there isnt such thing as magic however in the case transsexualism there is a way to turn into a different gender, plastic surgery.

True, but I got a silly counter-argument.

Suppose that we didn't have the technology to perform a sex-change on a human body, but had the genetic engineering skills to create something similiar to a unicorn.

Anyways, I just don't find it natural, to rip of balls and penis and inject gender-specific hormones into someone. If I were a girl and felt a bit like a guy, I'd be a tomboy, and that would and shouldn't prevent me from finding a partner, lover, soulmate, or whatever you want to call it.

My final point is, everything is in the mind. You born a girl but feel like a boy? Then go ahead and turn yourself into frankenstein, not my problem.

I think people who change gender do it because they're jealous of the other gender. Ever noticed how women get all the attention? Well if you're a loner who seeks attention it might seem attractive, and if on top of that you want to start a new life it could be the solution to start over.

Not everyone feels the same and if they believe their should be a boy then their would turn them self into a boy, you might not find it natural to "Rip your balls off" however everyone is different.

i know a few transgender people and i feel like its a conscious decision. But it always has and always will freak me out. I dont understand why people would go so far as to amputate one of the most important parts of your body just to become a girl

Every human has the same hormones, even men have female hormones and it does happen that men have more female hormones then male hormones. Which makes a case of Transsexualism.

I learned it this way at school. But oh well, everyone has his own opinion i guess.
