Introduction
I am changing the way you can download HoloCMS, and I've heard that Holograph Emulator will be converting to it as well. What are we talking about? SVN. SVN simply stands for Subversion. I have done this for various reasons:
a) It will be much easier to manage HoloCMS for me and future developers
b) It will be much easier for everyone to see exactly what changed when, and most importantly it's really to update your copy of HoloCMS.

Sigh I'm too lazy, can't you just RAR it?
No. Not my problem.

Downloading HoloCMS
1. Downloading a SVN Client
In order to use SVN you will need a SVN client. This tutorial will be based around TortoiseSVN, wich is what I recommend to all Windows users. You can download the application here:

2. Install TortoiseSVN
Pretty obvious. After downloading the SVN Client, install it.

3. Connecting to the SVN Server
First of all, find yourself a folder to download HoloCMS in. Now right click in the folder, and select 'SVN Checkout..':



You will now see the following screen:



As shown above, you need to fill in the location of the SVN. For HoloCMS the URL of the SVN is:

http://svn.assembla.com/svn/holo_cms

(July 2008: Updated URL to new one, Sisija's)

Now you need to select a location you want to download HoloCMS to in the second field. That doesn't matter - wherever you want to have it. Now, click OK, and it will start downloading HoloCMS.

NOTE: If you have downloaded HoloCMS before, it will not download it again, but update it instead! SVN ftw, right?

4. Wait while we do the work for you
Sit back and relax while TortoiseSVN does the job. It will now download or update HoloCMS for you. Easy, huh? This won't take very long, it's pretty fast actually.



5. You're done!
You have successfully downloaded HoloCMS! If you want to update HoloCMS, just repeat this process, and everything is done automaticly.


All future updates of HoloCMS will be placed in the SVN. I will no longer RAR everything for you. This seems easier for me and the users.

You say it isn't easier, but I don't really get that. You download a SVN client, you download HoloCMS, and upgrading is just a matter of making one click.

And again, if you're too lazy to do this, well meh not my problem.

Oh, and it may replace the config file for first-time SVN users that already have a copy of HoloCMS. Won't affect others.

GraphiX in my xxamp folder where my cms is after i have done everything i see 3 check marks on the files folder, documentation, extra folder.
Does that mean those were updated?

Btw, people be aware that this is gonna be the way of distributing sources of Holograph Emulator itself, too. ;]
Much easier to release revisisions, milestones etc, no more need for 'release source please...' because the latest source will always be available. =D

I was going to use an SVN for JASE - but i figured it'd just create so many 'HOW I DO ITZ' threads and PM's that i just didn't bother

Still, if people handle this easily (I have my doubts tbh..) Then i'll start using SVN (Since its so much easier - From a developers point of view)

Well, this option is good, but i better prefer RAR's and ZIP's

It is only easy for English people. If you speak a other language or you make the pages longer (other info etc. also) and you update it: translation + what they maked by there self is away.

It's easier for you but I don't think for the most users.

I think with the Holograph Emulator it's better but with HoloCMS... no. I've just all the pages translated to dutch (Community, Change look/mission etc.).

I prefer for HoloCMS just a .rar or .zip with some explination and Holograph also explination but there it's better because you don't have really something to translate or something like that.

Y'know I kinda sigh irl when looking at the betching I get on RaGEZONE and over MSN. If you're too damn lazy to use SVN it's not my problem.

The only real problem I've heard so far is the problem Sisja mentioned with translations, and I completely agree - so I'm converting everything to locale files asap.

Yea, I think this is the best way to deal with the source while it's still in development and not really useable for a Hotel.
I think, when it's stable enough to run a Hotel on, believe me, it will pwn, then there also should come noobfriendly packs *forgive me for using the word 'pack'* so they can setup a Hotel running Holograph CMS + emu easily, and finally lose the bad habit of using flatfiles. =]
Until then, if you don't know what you're doing and you want to be just a leecher, then wait heh.
