Then try 6.
Intel is developing a new Xeon, which will have 6 cores, and is supposed to run on the socket 771, but there may be a new socket in development also.

There's a huge L3 cache, up to 16MB..

It will run off the 45nm technology, and run at 2.66GHz.

The new processor is called the "Intel Xeon 7460"

Keep in mind, this is a server processor, and it's not for gamers..

4 cores is more then enough atm. Most people can hardly get 3 cores full.

Like I said, it's not for gamers, it's for Servers, which can use all 6 cores, and more.

Since some servers are used for making a cluster computer, used to crunch serious numbers, so you want all the power you can get.

And also people who render things in programs such as 3DMax could use more than 4 cores.

Hmm, Socket 771? Would then it be able to run on the Skulltrail board? But, I find the Core 2 Extreme editions more better than Xeon's in everyway.

hmm... 4 cores is enough for games... but speaking of that: i heard that there is an project on this world and that projects target is... to develop processor with 18 cores!!! ( to come think of it... playing crysis with that kind of processor + GTX 280 = lag 0%)
Anyway - why would users of 3Dmax need more than 4 cores... i am having PC with only one core and its rendering its ~ 10 sec. and about Core 2 Extreme - yes they are better, but look at the price - 1k$ =]

Lets hope it works on Skulltrail motherboards. 12 cores + 32mb of L3 cache? Hrm, may just beat the opterons :O

There are already processors that can handle Crysis no problem, stop throwing that game around wherever you see a new processor coming out with more power.

This is an XEON, A SERVER processor, this is NOT for home PC's.

Then you're not rendering very much, people render things that take 12 hours and more, on quad cores.
Your render obviously doesn't have a whole lot of detail or anything.
If you want to know more, ask Jhewt.

There's already 48 core processors from Azul ([Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]) and Intel is planning to release an 80 core ([Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]) within 4 years.

Even if you have 4 sockets with 48 cores Crysis wont run faster, in fact it's probably going to run slower. These processors aren't made for normal use as you are used to.

Virtualization.

Woah and i thought my 2 core processor was enough ^^

tbh only serious gamers need more than 2 ^^ the sort of people who want to play crisis on full easily.

What people don't realize is the processor instruction set is different on consumer CPU's and server CPU's.

Although it's very powerful, on a normal PC you'll never be satisfied, but a server builder will be very satisfied with a 6 core Xeon.

Xeon uses normal consumer-PC instruction set. The Itanium don't. Those I linked to use something completely different.

Those who render big things will have 3D max on a server PC. But remember that these kinds of processors can be used for a lot of other things, science etc.

Do you really think serious 3D developers want to wait hours?

People like game developers will use cluster PC's to render intensive images, they don't have time to wait for a home PC to get the job done...They'd have to have a ton of them.

So they connect a few server PC's and have them do the work.

And Xeon's do not have the same instruction set of C2Q or C2D, not to mention no Celeron or Pentium.

Ah sorry, I meant the architecture isn't the same, sorry.

I got the two confused apparently.
