Samsung has released a one terabyte (TB) hard drive that’s capable of storing around 40 billion songs (or something near that number perhaps) for only $1*** which is less than 100 English pounds.

The desire for HD-quality programming and hard disk drive (HDD) recorders has led to an increase in storage capacity, and now the industry is talking about things in TBs rather than GBs.

Although only an option for the PC, the EcoGreen F1 from Samsung offers a huge amount of storage for serial downloaders, or, as the Korean electronics company suggests, those with large surveillance capture needs.

Big space, little money

Any HDD for less than a hundred pounds has to be worth the money, and this capacity would surely be all the storage you would ever need. Ever, ever, ever.

Samsung have attempted to keep things decent in the spec stakes too, with 5400RPM rotational speeds, and offering the highest capacity per disk for one terabyte hard drives, at 334GB per platter.

This keeps the amount of parts needed down to a minimum, thus boosting the overall performance of the device.

Samsung says the drive uses up to 50 per cent less power than other one TB drives and has technology to keep it quiet through operation.

To be honest, it could sound like a jet engine taking off over a field of pneumatic drills, as for that price and that capacity it’s hard to care.

Available around the end of June of this year.

Definitely gotta love the prices of these drives. Will probably pick myself up a external 1TB in a while (using a laptop)

Their thinking is stupid. Take a massive drive but make it slower to reduce the power consumption. Sure it's good to have that much storage at the cost of less power but with that capacity the performance will be horrible if you are constantly accessing data on it.

5400RPM should only be used on laptop size drives and not regular ones.

I'll stick with a Seagate 7200.11 series drive. Reliable, fast and just as cheap.

Well i guess it depends on the use, if you use it like my brother for mass storage of music, videos, pictures and all that, then you don't need the speed, but saving some on your electricity bill is welcome.

Actually, storage drives are usually the fastest drives. Since you need to constantly access it to read the data. :1:

But really. If you are using a drive for mass storage then it's best to have it fast as the access time will be lowered. This is especially true if you are sharing it over a network as there is more requests from the drive that way.

Low speed drives are really only ideal for notebooks or as a dedicated OS drive.

Wow, 1TB is just 1000GB, so much damn space. I wish my computer's processor had 1TB of space. Then I can play GTA San Andreas without lag. =]

Anyways, thanks for the news. I want to buy it. =P

Huh? Are you confusing GB with GHz? Or are you referring to cache? Yeh if you had 1TB of cache, you could use your CPU to buy a small island. Expect to pay $5,000 for 1gb of cache.

And an old p4 with a 7900GT and 1gb of ram can play san andreas without lag... infact, probably even a 7600 would do it.

I played GTA San Adreas on my ATI Radeon 9200. I lagged on car collisions a bit but it worked rest of the times. But I fail to see how a 1TB HDD will help reduce lag?
