Do you have 2 ram sticks like 512x2? Or do you just have 1 also I have never heard of that? In task manager that it shows less? Try doing this
  • Click start
  • Right click "My Computer"
  • Click on Properties.

And if it still says 766MB of ram then try taking out both ram sticks if not only 1 ram stick and put it back in and make sure that there is no dust under the ram or in any of the slots. Good luck.

256mb is shared memory.

To confirm, type : "msinfo32" and "dxdiag" into run and check what they show for your RAM. Tell me what both say.

Yep there definitely is 1gb of RAM there, but 256MB of that is being used as shared memory with your graphics card.

Go into your BIOS and under components there should be something called "shared memory" or "memory allocated for video". Just disable that. Or you can reduce the value if you game allot and require more video RAM.

Not at all, i do not recommend using more than 256mb as shared memory mainly because regular RAM is alot slower than the RAM found in graphics cards (just like how virtual memory is so much slower than RAM).

If i were you, try reducing it to 128 or just try disabling it and test the performance each time. Usually for games you do not use all of your GFX card memory since nowadays they come with so much RAM. Therefore, shared memory is not actually needed at all unless you use onboard graphics (the real purpose of shared memory, i doubt new motherboards even have this feature anymore).

I know disabling it completely may sound like you're taking a hit with your performance, but hear me out. Instead of using the Graphics RAM, it is alot easier for programs (games) to use regular RAM instead. So what you will find is that your games are going slower cos your GFX card is not even using it's own RAM, it's using your slower system RAM. And then of course your computer has a whole will go slower since It cannot use the RAM you have allocated as shared.

Just test lowering and disabling it, one of them should give you better performance.
