The probably updated the wz files, which necessitates a full version change.

Exactly, they changed the wz files. Wz files do not store the current patch, only the current version, so to ensure that people are using the correct String.wz, they had to do a full version number change. That's the way their system works and I highly doubt they'd bother putting any effort into changing it.
