    Anatomy of a GOOD server

Let's face it, there's a lot of shitty servers out there that are probably ran by 15 year-olds who have no sense of professionalism, any marketing strategies, and are probably quick to DDoS any other server out there. Here's some tips from someone who's been running private servers since 2006, and can do it successfully:

    - Do not hire staff who are incompetent. Be picky, because a quality staff will not only retain users, they know what to do when problems arise. If you yourself are incompetent, your server will fail. Staff who feel they are part of a great team will not leave, thus reducing the need to hire and train new staff.
    - Give your staff an incentive to foster the community and help it grow. Start off small, just celebrating the little successes here and there, but if you grow large and start making some serious money, it's time to share that wealth with your staff, who are most likely working a lot harder than you. Here is a good example of such: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/85625698/gmprizes.png Why? Because you're going to owe tax on this income anyways, so you might as well have some things to write off. Online payment services such as PayPal will automatically notify the CRA/IRS of your income if you're raking in big dough, so keep track of every dollar you spend, and keep proof/receipts that every dollar has gone towards the server in one way or another. If you spend this money on yourself, you'll end up screwed big time if you get audited and claimed it as a write-off (if you haven't already been sued by Nexon by then).
    - Be an ambassador and a leader, no that doesn't mean boss people around. You're a role model for your server, you're not the "big boss that people must respect". The users run your server, not you. Without users, your server is useless, so users are always top priority and always come first. Make unannounced appearances around the server, don't just do events, but talk to your users. Ask them how things are going, if there's anything they feel you can improve on, etc., because outside feedback can go a long way. Talk to them about your plans for the server to improve, let them feel involved, your users will feel valued to be on your server.
    - Share the excitement of success with your staff, show them how excited you are that the server is improving and becoming a lot better, for example: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/85625698/Untitled.png , seriously give them the low-down on how things are going. If results are declining, work out an action plan together and get feedback ASAP, then act upon it.
    - Servers are popping up everywhere and the private server market is competitive, so know the market share of users that are out there. Don't be afraid to look at other servers and then try to beat them at their own game, or even come up with new features that no one else has.
    - Advertise strategically, make partnerships, affiliates, and reward referrals, but don't go overboard, or it will make you look like you're desperate. Remember, you need to be sure you advertise professionally, not like an idiot spamming other popular servers, because then no one will join at all.
    - Your website says a lot about who you are, keep it clean and organized. Having "VOTE4NX" crap plastered all over, that stupid as fuck xatChat thing, broken images, spam, popups, lots of ads makes you look like a pathetic loser, along with your crappy-ass server.
    - Do not DDoS other servers. Not only is it a criminal offense and highly illegal to do in most countries, you will lose a lot of respect if someone finds out, example is a competitor GunBound-WC server (won't list names). Caught using their userbase as a botnet by bugging their game client so whenever their users played their game, they were unintentionally DoSing a specified target that the administrator of that server has set. This server was exposed by someone big with a lot of followers, and before they were a fairly large server, however about 75% of their player-base has completely quit since the exposure, even though they no longer participate in such activities. They used to have 800 users online at their best, but have since then dwindled to 200 approximately at best, to almost zero users online at night. They also keep having server issues, most likely due to karma.
    - Dedicate yourself. Don't just set up a server, do the above in one day, and sit back and relax. You need to keep yourself involved for the server to be successful.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

You really claiming you came up with the rebirth/reborn concept? That shit has been around in MU ever since private servers existed.

Has it? I've never played MU, so I wouldn't know. If it'll make you feel better, I'll eliminate that part from my post then, was only using it merely as an example anyways (and honestly I don't even know what MU means actually lol, I'd have to Google it).

This is really the only point in your post that I sort of disagree with: only a handful of servers still out there just maybe fit this criteria you designed. One could probably provide evidence to basically say NO servers follow this criteria to a tee anymore.

Albeit the fact it's posted in the Maple Story section, it's general information, so doesn't just apply to Maple Story. ^^

Re: Anatomy of a GOOD server

Did not read all this shit, to much.

Anyways DDosing is a good way to earn respect and fear the enemies, here's some advice ill give you: Don't make a server if your not motivated to do it, it will be a failed investiment and a waste of your time, normally the first time is always the best because you're motivated.

You want to get money? That's easier than coding, when i didn't knew how to code i was able to get like 300/500$ per week, and you know why? Because i knew what people looked for, i put myself in their position. Not revealing more because a master never really teaches his techniques.

To have a sucessful server you have to understand your players, you have to know what they want, you have to put yourself as a player not as an admin/owner and ask yourself what you'd want in a server and then make it in your own.

One of the most important things and this is why my servers weren't a big sucess: You need a good team, if you have a good team your half-way there because when your tired or when you don't want to do something someone in your team will have the pleasure to do, when you can't do something just talk to them and get a soluction, with a team the server stays up longer and it's much easier.

by the way: for the haters who will reply this and try to get my attention i will not reply sorry.
In the end we're all alone, and no one is comming to save you.
    The numbers never stop comming.

Yes, I am wondering why is he still here?...
Like, he said that he doesn't play MapleStory in some threads, and apparently he plays the "real life world"... ? So, should he even be here?

Pfftt ... what a dimwit to have even started playing that. I tried that once, and let me tell you. The rates suck (don't even get me started), everything costs money (we say Nexon is money-hungry .. don't even get me going on real life). And its pay-by-month (WHAT KIND OF SCHEME IS THAT?!!??!) >.> .. he should've just emulated it ...
