Why not take your logs, trace the proxies they're hiding behind, and make a conscious decision.
Block the Class A - D (pick one) network(s) they're coming from (hopefully not where most of your players are coming from) and give it a go.
You could get the country Class addresses and by country eliminate.
Lots of solutions, but purchasing DDoS protection (probably a package available through your hosting provider) isn't a bad idea.

"Temporary" denial through Nulling of your IP isn't a bad idea if it is "short term" IE a few hours while your hosting provider or yourself install a purchased DDoS protection package or blocking the networks, etc. This will boil down to your wallet, your decisions on whom you don't mind blocking, how determined the DDoS creator is.

Just my 2 copper pieces. ;-)

Also a suggestion: Round-robin DNS with a bunch of cheap VPSes if you got the funds. We've been doing this since late 2011 on gunbound.ca, it's way cheaper than real DDoS protection and works incredibly well. Keep the real server null-routed on the public IP and VPN the real server to your VPSes, making them act as multiple proxies. Now for them to take you down, they'd have to attack multiple targets. Before this, we had attacks daily going up as much as 1.4 Gbps, but RR-DNS put an end to this permanently. Four months later, despite all the attempts at bringing us down (as we kept adding on more VPSes to increase protection), they eventually gave up forever. They could *not* bring us down. 1 year, 5 months strong, no downtime due to DDoS! Just as long as you don't give them a way to know your real server IP, your server will effectively stay up 100% of the time, your multiple proxies will take the hit for it instead. They would now have to attack multiple targets, thus saturating the strength of the DDoS, and with enough proxies, it could even do no effect! The more proxies, the better. You could get a VPS as cheap as $10/month each.

Also, cloudflare helps too.

Just acquire some protection service like this one : , this company will help you with your specific issue once it is solved, just explain to them about your application, and thats about it.

I suggest you look into the Winpcap + Windows Firewall solution that MentaL mentioned earlier this year. (what Darkstra said)
