Stuck setting up a server? Feeling fed up?

Okay, since I have been asked on countless occasions how to port forward I have decided to make a simple guide on how to port forward your basic router.

The following guide was made using a Buffalo router.

This will NOT tell your specifically how to port forward your model router but will give you the gist of the know how.

Lets get started.

Step One-
Create a shortcut to "cmd" on your desktop.
Open up the shortcut and you should see a black box. [dont panic, its nothing bad]

Step Two-
In the black box, type the following "ipconfig" and note down your "Default Gateway" and "IP Address" under your "Ethernet Adapter"

Step Three-
Open up Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera or any other internet browser you prefer and enter the following, "http://defaultgateway".
Where "defaultgateway" is the numbers of your default gateway you noted down earlier.
This should then give you a prompt for a username and password, if you have changed your routers username or password, by default it should be:
Username: root
Password: [blank]
or
Username: admin
Password: admin
or
Username: admin
Password: password or pass

If you have changed the credentials, enter them in.
If none of your logins work, you have a problem...

Step Four-
You should have entered your routers main configuration page.
Now for the tricky part.
Scour around the settings and options and try and locate a link for:
Port Mapping
Port Forwarding
NAT or Network Address Translation
[If your router has other names for it, please post]

Step Five-
After pressing the link you will be directed to a page with alot of boxes and numbers.
Again, scour around for boxes with a label "TCP" and "UDP" in these boxes enter the ports you want to forward.
If instead you are given two boxes asking you to state a Start and End port, in both boxes enter the same port if you don't to port forward a range. For example:
Code:
   Start End
   8484 8484
Example with NO range.
or
Code:
   Start End
   8484 9000
Example with range from 8484 to 9000.

Step Six-
You will then be asked what your LAN IP address is, enter this in.
Usually it will already be entered and available as a radio button.

Step Seven-
Press Ok and you should have port forwarded that particular port/s!

Lols, I think D-Link is different, because, when I inserted my computer IP, it didn't work. When I put in my Default Gateway IP, it worked. But that was like 2 months ago.

Ok, I mean, like :
My gateway is say...
(I'm making this up)
123.0.0.1
I put in 123.0.0.100
and it let people connect.

Re: [Guide]How to PortForward

The one that provides internet is called a modem, the one that provides the wireless is the router.
Just follow the guide and it should all come together

Thanks, well I've done all the steps for my model and it never seems to work. I have even turned off my windows firewall to check. =/

Re: [Guide]How to PortForward

I mean, in the port forwarding, where you have "Server IP" try changing that to your WAN IP.

You are meant to connect through your LAN IP unless you have installed the Microsoft Loopback Adapter.
To connect to your website you use

Re: [Guide]How to PortForward

Yeah 127.0.0.1 works, but I was trying to make it public. Also, my wan IP changes often.. do i still use it?

And when using my wan ip this is what I get , Server IP address must be a LAN IP address.

Re: [Guide]How to PortForward

If your WAN IP changes, it means you have a dynamic IP.
You will need to use No-IP to update if you want people to connect to your website.

Re: [Guide]How to PortForward

You should add that they need the port 8888 (World port). Some people don't; But a lot of others do; Most of the people I talk to without 8888 forwarded cannot pass character select; (Nor could I; I will post an SS of my port ranges);

Innovative - [Tut]How to PortForward - RaGEZONE Forums

And here's another person who's didn't work without 8888;

Innovative - [Tut]How to PortForward - RaGEZONE Forums

So; Yeah; Its probably better to do the range of 7575 - 8888; With TCP & UDP protocols
