Kal section mods overkill on closing/deleting threads?

Why must nearly every topic in the sections main discussion area be closed? I made a topic pointing out what I believe is over-moderation getting to the point of ending actual discussion in the section and THAT thread got deleted for "Wrong section". I've been coming to this section for the past ~10 years on and off, I used to moderate the section... The base section has always been a discussion section exactly where my post should belong...

I feel it was deleted because I was suggesting the mods might want to change their style for the better of the section.

Anyway, posted here because it would just get deleted if posted in the section as a suggestion to the mods.

Ok, I'll give you what insight I have into this section so you better understand the positions of myself and Droppy (if I may speak for him).

When given this section to moderate, we were warned it could be quite a "sporadic" section, as there are a lot of... 'outspoken' people that make part of this section.

Refer to my post in the main section: https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/reminder-newcomers-veterans-alike-1069770/

When I was first assigned as Moderator to KalOnline, I went through the section and had a look at existing content... the majority of which was vile language, flaming, trolling and very unclean releases/discussions (mostly replies to OP).

Discussion topics are generally closed for one of two reasons:

1. The discussion has gotten/is getting out of control and we close it to prevent people from turning it into a flamefest, but leave the actual post there in the cases of insightful information.

2. They were unwarranted to begin with, and violate either KalOnline section rules, or General Forum rules.

When I came into the section, there was an abundance of repeat offenders that were constantly having their posts deleted/receiving warnings, and thus we have become quite tight in keeping the section clean and mature.

I'm sorry you don't agree with this. In some cases, it may be slightly unfair, because you as a decent user feel punished for the stupidity of others, just bear in mind it's not because of you. If you are not having posts deleted/being warned, then you are setting a good example for the section. (In this case, you haven't been infracted in nearly 7-8 years).

We do not like infracting/deleting/warning, but in the case of the Kal section, we feel it's necessary.

Yes, the section has been known for trolling, flaming and overall being terrible people, but every time a new mod comes in they try going more and more into the over-moderation to attempt to end it and it stops more people from posting...

The biggest issue with it is that the people who stop posting tend to be the knowledgeable users rather then the leachers... I can't think of more then 1-2 of the developers from when I was active... The more over-bearing the mods in the section get the less trolling happens just because less people use the section...

More then that though it seems the discussion section is not able to be used at all.

goodbye thread - not off topic, not very rude overall

question about something, might be a bit off section topic... but not far enough to deserve closed

discussion, it died off but closing it so someone cant contribute later?
https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/save-section-1059003/

discussion, mostly about missing old users
https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/deathart-1053737/

don't really care here but closing it was pointless
https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/gratz-1050908/

just talking about kal it's a pointless topic but it hurts no one and does at least encourage talking to each other
https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/addicted-1072983/

talking about anti viruses, nothing more I see no reason to make someone with input later on open a new topic
https://forum.ragezone.com/f241/antii-virus-1044237/index2.html

The section will not get new members, it's an old section and the only option to keep people going is to keep existing devs and bring back the ones who left... closing every discussion thread doesn't do that.

The Kal Section had a "lenient" Moderator not so long ago. I think it was during a period where you were inactive for a year or so. The section got so out of hand that MentaL had to close it down completely, ie: you had to have a password to access it.

The current Moderators for the Kal Section have been instructed to be more strict and less lenient with flamers, spammers etc.

The threads that get closed are the ones where we can see the trend of the conversation and it gets closed before things escalate. We have countless threads that were not caught in time and they eventually had to be deleted completely due to vulgar content and flaming.

If the guys want to discuss development in a civilized, coherent and respectful manner, then that's fine of course. If they want to discuss what they had for lunch yesterday, or who the newest scammer is, then it does not belong in the section.

In summary, the Moderators are only doing what they are expected to do.

As mentioned by Kreeate, we do not moderate with malice intent, more so with the precaution of stopping flaming before it has a chance to begin.
I hope this brings a little more clarity to the matter.

P.S. Also previously mentioned, if you are not violating any rules, you have no need to be concerned. We need more users like yourself in the section to set a good example for other developers and change the current trend.
