A [showcase] thread is essentially a bragging thread.
I personally don't care for them either.
They are allowed in some sections because they generally result in a release of some kind.
They don't have to result in a release, though.
As long as he doesn't make reference to selling what he is bragging about or make a Rule #27 violation to that accord, this thread follows the rules and is allowed.
