The original film was one of the better screenplays for a Stephen King book. It certainly wasn't about a girl having super powers, but was about the power of repressed emotion. There was absolutely nothing super-natural about Carry, and must never be. That would ruin the entire story.
The religious zeal of her mother, and an upbringing which tells young girls that menstruating is brought about by sin, sex is sin, babies come from GOD and have nothing to do with sex etc. etc. etc. and the derision of a world full of people raised to believe sex sells and is the doorway to everything good causes massive mental turmoil.
Most of the film is shot through the delusional state of her pubescent mind. At the end of the move, that fragile psyche breaks. Maybe the basic fire in the dance hall was real, but it wasn't anything to do with her. That was all in her mind.
You can always tell when a screenplay is based on reading one of his books, and when it's based on skimming the plot line of one. Stephen King doesn't write about ghosts or aliens or living cars. XD What he writes about, is people whose perception of reality is so twisted, they can suck others into their delusions. He writes about the power of imagination being greater than those of reality, under the right conditions.
I've seen such terrible reviews of the new interpretation, I really don't want to watch it.
