What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in "The Walking Dead"? This spin-off set in Los Angeles, following new characters as they face the beginning of the end of the world, will answer that question.

Trailers:

A spinoff from AMC's gut-guzzling record-breaker The Walking Dead was first announced way back in September 2013, but for much of the year that followed, fans were kept in the dark as to what the proposed new series might involve.

In recent months though, hints and teasers have begun trickling forth from camp AMC and with the spinoff pilot shooting any day now, Digital Spy has assembled everything we know so far about the sister show.

What's It Called?
Rumour - though from a pretty reliable source - has it that the spinoff is named Fear the Walking Dead. In early stages of development, the project was known as Cobalt - though it's believed that was only ever a codename.

What's It About?
It's been confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead will take place during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse - that period its parent series missed, with Rick in his coma - and is set in Los Angeles, over 2,000 miles from Atlanta where The Walking Dead is set.

Who's In It?
(links out to IMDB)

- Gang Related, Training Day, Sunshine
- Gone Girl, Treme, Deadwood
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- The 100, Into the Storm

Who Are They Playing?
"This is going to be a show about family," The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman revealed earlier this month. "But it's going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven't explored in The Walking Dead thus far."

To that end, Dickens is Nancy Tompkins - a guidance counsellor and single mother-of-two who appears innocent on the surface, but has a dark side. Her two children are troubled former drug addict Nick (Dillane) and the forthright Ashley (Debnam-Carey).

Curtis is the series' male lead, divorced teacher and all-round "good man" Sean Cabrera. A casting call for the show also listed Sean's ex-wife Andrea and his rebellious son Cody as central characters, though casting for that pairing is yet to be announced.

Who's Behind The Camera?
Directing the pilot episode is Adam Davidson - a newcomer to the world of The Walking Dead but a veteran helmer with episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Parenthood, Community and much more under his belt.

Robert Kirkman will executive produce alongside The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert and has also scripted the spinoff pilot along with Dave Erickson.

Formerly a producer on Sons of Anarchy, Erickson is also the showrunner on Fear the Walking Dead.

"I have been a huge fan of Dave Erickson for many, many years - he was the best possible guy for the job," Kirkman said in March last year.

Will there be crossovers between The Walking Dead and the spinoff series?
Since April, Robert Kirkman has insisted that any spinoff from The Walking Dead would be "stand-alone" and he reiterated that intention earlier this month, saying: "You could watch The Walking Dead spinoff if you've never watched an episode of The Walking Dead and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it."

Greg Nicotero - co-executive producer and make-up mastermind on the original series - has also affirmed that Fear the Walking Dead is being treated as "a completely separate entity".

"Many of us - the actors and the executive producers - wanted to make sure that anything we did, we didn't want it to diminish our story, our storyline, our characters and the momentum that we have. So the intent is that [the new show] is going to be its own standalone world."

Kirkman has also confirmed that no characters from the Walking Dead comic book that he co-created with artist Tony Moore will appear on the new show. That being said, recent rumours suggest that one of the spinoff's original characters will feature in a six-episode arc on The Walking Dead's sixth season.

Who might that character be? That information is yet to be disclosed - though Noah Emmerich has made it clear that he's keen to reprise his role as the late Dr Edwin Jenner - the CDC pathologist who debuted (and perished) in The Walking Dead's first season finale.

Juan G. Pareja - who played the character Morales, again in The Walking Dead's first season - was briefly listed on IMDB as appearing in the spinoff pilot, though his name has since been removed, so take that nugget with a big pinch of salt.

When's It Airing?
At this point, Fear the Walking Dead is only at the pilot stage - it's not been picked up to series, which means it's not 100% confirmed to reach our screens.

Some news outlets have the spinoff provisionally slated for a late 2015 premiere, though that's very much TBA at the moment.

Could this be the lead into a Series Finale of Walking Dead in the near future?????

It would be nice if there were some "easter egg" references to TWD in the new series....like when someone had the thought that Breaking Bad and TWD were somehow linked with the red Challenger and the sales manager named Glenn....

Highly unlikely, the producers say there wont be cross overs. But taking into account that it is set like 2 years before The Walking Dead (Ricks Path) it could be possible to see some 'dead' characters. Plus it is in different states.
