So I finally got it all working, I overlooked opening a port * and ended up a lot of time figuring it out.

So a blocked port is causing the block from entering the character selection menu? I'm stuck at the server selection. I can get through to the game server according to the logs, but it stays stuck there.

I got it to work. It has been a while so I don't remember the details. I can take a look at it in a few days.

No need I managed to get everything working thanks to your repack. I had some compiling errors but I fixed them using the dao-whatever folder from the released server files.
