This was added by msimpson in 2007, probably for of his physics debugging code, but I think it's a bad idea. It causes deadlocks in various
exceptional circumstances, and poor performance in situations that would otherwise be OK. I think the minor cosmetic problems of concurrent
colored printf is not worth the risk. It's possible that this is something that we want in only in dev mode, or perhaps only for certain
app types, but for now, I'm just going to leave it off by default.
