It only depends what do you want to accomplish... if you want a dedicated server you need vsphere for vmware image, if you want to play only occassional, you just need a simple workstation.... for testing i recommending a simple workstation...
Differences:
Vsphere/esxi = Automated, 0-24 server. It behaves as a real server you can use multiple vmware images at a time it is a separate OS.(ALSO IT NEEDS AT LEAST ONE GIGABIT CAPABLE ETHERNET card or it WONT work at all...)
Workstation/Player = if you want only play sometimes, but not always... you fire up the image only when you want to play alone or with friends in lan... it mostly runs on windows... thats all...
But i belive you should stick to the workstation in your method...
