Drops disappear for 2 reasons.
  • Time out (been there too long and nobody picks up)
  • Memory cleanup (insufficient memory to support more objects)
To increase the memory allocation (which is already stretched to capacity of 32-bit machine) port source code of server to x64 and run on 64-bit hardware, or place a higher emphasis on utilising tertiary storage (non-paged hard disk files / Database Engine entries).

To stop drops disappearing when there are too many drops on the floor without re-writing the server, reduce the number of drops, or the speed with which players can kill monsters. :eek:tt1:

Yes, what bob said is true. You need to reduce the number items dropped by the monsters to prevent such things from happening.

The other option that is you is to turn on *DISABLE_THROWITEM . If I recall correctly, it works by that whenever you drop an item from your inventory, it vanishes rather than appearing on the floor. So the one issue with that is, you have to be careful on deciding whether you want or do not want an item since once you drop it, it will vanish forever ^^. Test it out and see if that is what you are looking for.

We used to drop items we picked up by mistake that would be more use to other party members... you couldn't do that if you *DISABLE_THROWITEM. Instead, you would have to offer to trade it with the member who could make more use of it, and let them throw it if they choose.

It's doable, but can be tricky in heavy PvE action. And if you are getting more drops than the server can cope with, I guess you have a lot of heavy PvE action on your server. XD

Players may also have to be very careful they don't play with full inventory. If you pick something up when your inventory is full, no matter how good it is they may have no choice but to destroy it... I'm not sure though.
