    Chemistry

Couldn't think of where else to post this, but recently, in chemistry, we were doin states of matter and about enthralpys (melting / boiling points ) and i mentioned sublimation, and my teacher couldn't explain why it happens.

Was just curious if anyone here can.

I did, there's way too many definitions, not enough of why it happens, my teacher said he'll give extra effort for the peoplet that can get the explenation. I've looked in some encyclopedias, but not much, something about a pressure constant, but i just want a more in depth reason, like why at perticular enthralpies etc

Kemystery? (<-- lame spelling but I like it).

Here's holy grail of all Chemistry sites on the net for UK A-Level students such as myself: www.chemguide.co.uk. It's written by a proper chemistry know it all. It covers all blah, blah, blah. You dont need to know this.

Anyhow type in sublimation into the Google search thingy at the top of the page. Here! I'll even link you to the results page: Aren't I a nice guy?!.

You'll see 2 results. I've had a quick breeze of them.

The "phase diagrams of pure substances" looks promising. It's a bit of a long read but the guy who wrote this is unbelievably thorough and accurate. If there's anything you might not understand on the page then there's usually a link to another part of the site that will explain it.

So yeh. It's a long read, but I'm pretty sure you'll find somekind of answer. Btw, read it fully from top to bottom. It makes more sense even if the first 3/4 may seem irrelevent.

And stick this in yer favourites. Like I sed. The Holy Grail of Chemistry sites for all UK A-Level Chemistry students. Good Luk!

Cheers dude, but the point of this thing is that we research it, and get it to further than just A level chemistry. He gave us a hint about electrons and the pressure constant, and something about enthralpy. Ps, things like that are sorta in my book :)

P.P.S. There is a 4th state of matter, PLASMA, it's superheated air, where the a=nuclei split and it's just bunches of protons and neutrons in an electron field or something like that. Do you know what the simplest example of that is?

FIRE, it was in front of us all the time, they just never told us it was a state of matter :/ Well, i've had to research that, and it helped a bit, but now it's this, and nothing i found took it in more detail for some reason >.<

Sounds like the merging of chemistry and physics.

Fire's a plasma? Hmm... I'd never have guessed! Ah well.. I'd help more but I've got to finish writing up some xmas cards and revise for a (suprise, suprise) mock chemistry exam tomorrow!

    *checks time* Correction... TODAY!

    What?

I've gotten 63% in my last one! Be proud of your B! I've just dropped to a C this year! :(

    & I need a B for Uni!

    In UK:

    80% or more = A
    70% or more = B
    60% or more = C
    50% or more = D
    40% or more = E/U (Fail)

    in israel its pure numbers
    100=100
    99=99
98=98 and so on and so on and so on.............

and bdw.. what are the characteristicsa of this "plasma" thing?
fire imo is more like a gas, but its true that it does have something different than the rest of the gasses. It relys on oxygen to live, all other gases dont, and therefore, it doesnt spread. It stays the same size (match, lighter) the more you feed it the bigger it gets (wild fires, ect.) and it needs wood or something to use as its core. What other examples are there of plasma things?

    US:

    90% or more = A
    80%-89% = B
    70%-79% = C
    60%-69= D
    59 and below = F

least as far as I know hehe.. some schools may have different scales of course... not too odd really

yeah... my school fails u if u get a 65 or below >.<

sigh, chemistry was one of my easiest classes that ive taken >.<
i got a bad grade of 97% and that was for 3 reasons:
    1) i never studied
    2) i played poker with a m8 in class every day
    3) i didn't try at all

At my college, all classes require at least a 2.0 to pass (C or 70% or better)

Though some of the harder classes you need at least a 3.0 (B or 80% or better) >.<

Almost all stars (like the sun, you know, that bright shiny thing in the sky) in the universe are made of plasma. and as Corrupt sed:

Except I wud replace superheated air with gas cos it can be any gas can be made into a plasma by strippin its atoms of all its electrons.
