Chinese or Japanese?

Yeah, someone told me a while ago it's much easier to learn Japanese (Kanji symbols in specific) if you have knowledge of Mandarin, do you speak it fluently or something? (I think I saw you post in a thread not too long ago that you are).

I probably would learn both eventually if I really liked one or the other, but I'm a slow learner when it comes to languages. An Italian girl I used to talk to a lot once told me to completely learn a language you have to immerse yourself into the culture (which is pretty hard because I rarely see any Chinese or Japanese people around where I live), and is why I was more drawn to Japanese due to watching a lot of anime.

Did you learn either of these languages online by the way?

I'd have to say I feel more passionate towards learning Japanese if I'm going to be honest, but on the other hand Mandarin seems the most logical one to pick up because it's likely to help me more in the future with my career than Japanese would. Each has it's positive sides and I'll probably try learning both eventually, I'm just unsure what I should try first.

I am a native Mandarin speaker and am fluent in Hokkien too. I'm Chinese, so aye.

Not an expert in Japanese but a lot of Kanji is based on Chinese characters, though pronounced differently.

In my opinion, learning how to pronounce those Mandarin words, knowing the tones all these would aid in learning Japanese. Of course, I'm in not position to say if it works the other way round.

If you are more passionate in learning Jap, then I say go with Jap. If you are not learning out of neccessity, then go with what you like.

Japanese imo... I guess it's just me being biased though. I honestly think to me(just a guess) that if you put "I can speak/write Japanese fluently..." will look better than "I can speak/write Chinese fluently..." on a resume/application/whatever. But that's personal preference.

Since you're bout to learn both, go for it!

China is now sitting on the top of the global economy food chain. For a further advance stage, you should buck up your Chinese rather than your Japanese. It's a good start anyway that you took your first step and start learning new languages. Trilingual is always the best, am I right, dear Asians on the board?
