You seem to underestimate the situation. You are talking about 'some' abandonment issues. She is killing her child, if you class this as 'some' then I don't want to know what you think are 'a lot' of abandonment issues.
This is definitely a mental illness, that doesn't mean abandonment issues can't be 1 of them, but it would be part of a mental illness as this is so extreme that it can't be anything else.
You obviously have no idea what kind of relationships people with mental illnesses get in? That's right, with people who have 1 as well.

Her case is mild, severe at most, if we were to classify the intensity of the illness. This does not mean, however, that she doesn't need help. Both of them have just enough bats in their belfries.

Well I'm glad you followed some classes. But my work is to actually work with people with mental illnesses.
This is extreme. I'm not sure what they thought you in class, but extreme versions of mental illnesses are very different depending on the mental illness. They simply cannot be compared.
This is why use a system to make a diagnosis, otherwise it would be impossible to determine anything.
Now it's hard for me to tell what is exactly wrong with her, that it's a mental illness is clear to me as she does not realize what she is doing, she's definitely not stupid enough to understand this (this requires a very low IQ and those people can't function at all). Now what does that make this a extreme case.
All over the world we use the DSM IV, it's a book used to diagnose people, but also of course to get a better understanding about people who have already a diagnosis.
To determine in what kind of situation someone is we use a 5 axis system.
What makes her a extreme case is Axis 4. In this case she is killing her son, it's as simple as that. As long as she helps him stay fat, she is really killing him. Now aside from him, this is hurting her a lot, every parent wants the best for their kids, so this hurts her, if he were to die then this would destroy her, not only would she lose her kid, but she would be responsible for it. Axis 5 is to determine how well someone is functioning. Someone who is 'slowly' killing their kid, is obviously functioning extremely poor, she does function well in other things, but Axis 5 does not look at averages, it looks if they are a danger to them self or to others. She is, a huge danger in fact.

I don't understand how it's the mothers fault. At one point you should be able to notice that you are eating WAY too much, and if you can't - it is no one's fault but your own.

It's the mother's fault 'cause if she just stopped feeding him like she was feeding 4 complete families he wouldn't be that fat and unable to live. She could be helping him, pay him serious surgery, force him to diet, all kind of shits like it.

Every one deserves to have a life as long as it has been given, you gave him life, why would you take it from him? Yes the mother is at fault, aside from keep feeding him, she probably made him fat in the first place.
You wonder how? How about that most people love food and as we all know, a lot of the tastiest food is bad for you. Now you go give a 6 year old bad food and he will eat it until he pukes and then probably continues. Keep that up for years and years and the kid will get extremely fat.
This wasn't done over night, this took years and years, long before he was really able to make that kind of decision himself.
Right now it would be hard for him to change that, I mean what if he eats less, then he would still be a big fat blob who can't move around, this is such a extreme case, I honestly wouldn't know where he should begin.
And don't say he should just eat a normal amount, because that would be torture for him.

The simple fact is that everyone just loves to think that every person makes their own decisions, but the fact is that mental illnesses often influence them greatly, sometimes it's purely the illness that does it.
No matter how much you think you know about psychology, the simple fact remains that she has a serious mental illness for her to basically kill her son. If you are beyond understanding that, then please never claim to know psychology ever again, because someone might actually believe you know what you are talking about and cause some serious problems for other people.

Sadly it's not been mentioned but I think I read somewhere that the mother had already lost one of her children and since the death she went into total nurturing mode. I believe the son had a gastric bypass also.

There's hope for this guy in my opinion. Start by clapping his hands to lose a bit of weight. slowly work up.
How is this a special case? 90% of the criminals who have done serious crimes have either mental illnesses or have endured enormous psychological trauma's.
I've read she had lost a baby as well, I believe it was at 18 months. There is a really good chance this strengthened what she has been doing. This is again why we use the 5 axis, because it's rarely 1 thing alone, after all someone who has a serious mental illness will develop other problems, which in turn makes it even harder to function with that mental illness.
They have also said she is getting therapy and has a hard time dealing with all of this, saying she just wants what is best for her son, while not fully understanding what's she is doing to him.
A mental illness is not a excuse to do whatever you want, but in this case it took such a extreme form which almost got her son killed (apparently he has lost half his weight due to a diet and surgery), then you need to look at the mental illness, you have to figure out what that is so that you can treat her properly.
Basically it's divide and conquer. They are always more then just their mental illness, figure out the illness, remove that from who he/she is and see what's left, then look at other factors, until you have a clear view of what caused what.
Take in this case Borderline, people with borderline have a hard time letting go and will go to extremes to keep people close, add to that the loss of her first child and you could end up with this.
Obviously I have no idea if she has borderline, in that case you would ask more and more questions until she would fit a certain mental illness.
