Does anybody pay people to place ads on their site?

I'm wondering if people pay's other people to place ad's on their site.

My site has 1,800+ members

Yes, but it makes your site look worse and isn't a lot of money. Plus it tends to annoy users, more than likely reducing your user count.

Use it as a last resort to pay for hosting costs.

Ads seem to be a good idea and I don't get annoyed by them so if I had a good website, then I would get ads.
