Don't you log your chats?
If you are not sure then just check your mirc directory and all.
If you do then search your logs for like serial number etc.

Ok 2 things, first of all if it makes noises then it's probably a piece of junk, second if it goes slow then optimize it.
You see a harddrive works with empty spots and all, let's say each spot is 1 mb, and it has totally 10mb
If it's completely full then it will look like this - X X X X X X X X X X
Now you are removing a program of 2 mb and one of 3 mb, the 2 mb was something you installed early on, and the 3 mb was the second last thing you installed, now that you removed it the harddrive will look like this - X X O O X X O O O X
There aren't problems now, but now see what happens when you install something of 4 mb. N = New program
X X N N X X N N O X
As you can see the new program hasn't got the parts next to each other, so when you use that program, then it will be requesting data from all 4 spots, but because they are far away from each other it will need some time to get to the other parts, making it respond slow.
If you run a optimizer then it will switch things around, so that all the data will be near each other, so it would look something like this
X X N N N N X X X O
It will always put the open spots at the end, because if it wouldn't then the next time you put something on it then the same thing might happen.
Now i don't know what kind of harddrive you got, but if you got 1 of those older and smaller 5400 rpm harddrives then it will be pretty slow, and if you would have to delete stuff all the time for other stuff, then things really get messy fast.
So just let it optimize for a night every once in a while, it will be then just as quick, and you won't have to re-install all the time.

That's odd, if there would be bad sectors then it should find them, anyway then i don't exactly know what's wrong with it.
Try posting it over at www.xtremepccentral.com maybe someone there knows, but there is a good chance that you should just buy a new harddrive, which isn't that bad most of the time because they are cheap and very big these days, i really want to buy a big one myself these days.

Your advise is good - buy a new hard drive.
