Re: Global Warming!! Were Slowly Drowning!

I'm surprised no one has posted a "Global Warming is bullshit" kind of comment.

I'm believing it's all true, why would they lie about something like this? I do believe we're slowly killing off our planet, and ultimately, our people. As for the "nothing we can do" that's pretty false. We could be doing a hell of a lot to halter the process we've started, but really now -- America doing something? Some people choose to help out the world, and those are people to admire, but the majority of us just contribute to it. I guess the day that a big red sign on the news flashes "Do something or you're going to die", nothing major is going to take place.

As for life underwater .. it would be pretty difficult to keep that up. It would take many, many years of preparation to even get the underwater world built. I don't believe, with the time that's supposedly left, we'd be able to pull off that kind of thing in time. I guess that's why they're doing such heavy examination on the Moon, possibly to have life on there someday.

Btw was it me or did the OP make no sense at all :S. Just seemed like he clashed in random sentences that didn't make sense when together and then slapped a few pictures on to illustrate what he meant

Unfortunately I am here to jizz all over the peace in this thread.
Any ice which is in any body of water will not affect the water level at all when it melts, try it with an ice cube in a glass. The reason sea levels are rising is because of expansion of water in the ocean. The truth about global warming is that any energy which doesn't escape the atmosphere is here to stay. We can either let it be photosynthesised by plants and eventually released into the atmosphere, or we can harness its power immediately and release it back out into the open. If the amount of energy reaching the earth is greater than the amount managing to radiate past the ozone it will only get hotter here.

I'm glad I finally got that off my chest.

Confused me XP. Ice, the glaciers, is frozen water, so by melting more water would be released. Right? So why would that not increase water levels...@_@

Re: Global Warming!! Were Slowly Drowning!

The ignorance in this thread saddens me. Stop listening to money seeking politicians for once and maybe listen to a scientist?

Al Gore says global warming is a planetary emergency. It is difficult to see how this can be so when record low temperatures are being set all over the world. In 2007, hundreds of people died, not from global warming, but from cold weather hazards.

Since the mid-19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. This slight warming is not unusual, and lies well within the range of natural variation. Carbon dioxide continues to build in the atmosphere, but the mean planetary temperature hasn't increased significantly for nearly nine years. Antarctica is getting colder. Neither the intensity nor the frequency of hurricanes has increased. The 2007 season was the third-quietest since 1966. In 2006 not a single hurricane made landfall in the U.S.

South America this year experienced one of its coldest winters in decades. In Buenos Aires, snow fell for the first time since the year 1918. Dozens of homeless people died from exposure. In Peru, 200 people died from the cold and thousands more became infected with respiratory diseases. Crops failed, livestock perished, and the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency.

Unexpected bitter cold swept the entire Southern Hemisphere in 2007. Johannesburg, South Africa, had the first significant snowfall in 26 years. Australia experienced the coldest June ever. In northeastern Australia, the city of Townsville underwent the longest period of continuously cold weather since 1941. In New Zealand, the weather turned so cold that vineyards were endangered.

Last January, $1.42 billion worth of California produce was lost to a devastating five-day freeze. Thousands of agricultural employees were thrown out of work. At the supermarket, citrus prices soared. In the wake of the freeze, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asked President Bush to issue a disaster declaration for affected counties. A few months earlier, Mr. Schwarzenegger had enthusiastically signed the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, a law designed to cool the climate. California Sen. Barbara Boxer continues to push for similar legislation in the U.S. Senate.

In April, a killing freeze destroyed 95 percent of South Carolina's peach crop, and 90 percent of North Carolina's apple harvest. At Charlotte, N.C., a record low temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit on April 8 was the coldest ever recorded for April, breaking a record set in 1923. On June 8, Denver recorded a new low of 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Denver's temperature records extend back to 1872.

Recent weeks have seen the return of unusually cold conditions to the Northern Hemisphere. On Dec. 7, St. Cloud, Minn., set a new record low of minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit. On the same date, record low temperatures were also recorded in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Extreme cold weather is occurring worldwide. On Dec. 4, in Seoul, Korea, the temperature was a record minus 5 degrees Celsius. Nov. 24, in Meacham, Ore., the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Fahrenheit colder than the previous record low set in 1952. The Canadian government warns that this winter is likely to be the coldest in 15 years.

Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri are just emerging from a destructive ice storm that left at least 36 people dead and a million without electric power. People worldwide are being reminded of what used to be common sense: Cold temperatures are inimical to human welfare and warm weather is beneficial. Left in the dark and cold, Oklahomans rushed out to buy electric generators powered by gasoline, not solar cells. No one seemed particularly concerned about the welfare of polar bears, penguins or walruses. Fossil fuels don't seem so awful when you're in the cold and dark.

If you think any of the preceding facts can falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. Nothing creates cognitive dissonance in the mind of a true believer. In 2005, a Canadian Greenpeace representative explained global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter. In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can't make this stuff up.

Global warming has long since passed from scientific hypothesis to the realm of pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo.
Seriously, try doing some research before declaring that the world is melting...

Oh, by the way, did you bother looking out your window before posting this? Look at the current (January 15, 2009 2:45PM) temperatures.

-24 Fahrenheit is -31.2 Celsius for those in UK or Europe.

So uh, what were you saying again? Something about it being warm, right?

EDIT: Here is the current wind chill...

Remember it is noon to 3pm in America the hottest part of the day here...
The low in New York is 4 Fahrenheit, with a windchill of -6 Fahrenheit...

heh, yeah, let's examine localised areas within small time frames in order to form judgements on what is a long term global phenomenon. That makes sense

    oh wait

btw it's ironic that you tell people not to listen to 'money seeking politicians' when nearly all scientists who dismiss global warming have links to companies and groups who benefit from doing so. I think you'll find that the vast majority of scientists accept global warming as a reality, so take your own advice and listen to them.

Over 17,000 scientists have signed a petition calling for rejection of the Kyoto treaty. This overshadows any collection of scientists that have endorsed the treaty. The treaty is so bad the Senate opposed it 95 to 0, with 5 absent or abstaining.

Oh and lets not forget Al Gore who owns a Carbon Offset Organization, and you are telling me that environmentalists aren't trying to make money off this. Wow, I dont know whether to laugh at you, or cry for you...

This is America guys! We know when something is threatening the lives of Americans and Innocent people in the world! If it was, We would start a war on it to protect the citizens!

you're the one trying to deny that global temperature has increased with such compelling arguments as "its pretty cold over here man!". If you deny global warming then you are extremely stupid. There is no debate on whether it exists, and only minor debates on what the causes are - which is what the (outdated now by 11 fucking years) petition you speak of dealt with. And you'll forgive me for not looking toward the US government for a guide on what's good and what isn't given that they can't even provide basic healthcare for their own citizens and still murder their criminals. In fact the senate is the last place I'd go for that sort of thing. I'd rather look toward more socially developed countries like the EU, Canada and Australia, where every one of us have ratified the Kyoto protocol. In fact you can congratulate yourselves for being the only 'developed' nation on the planet to not have done so. I guess that's what happens when you allow major corporations to take over your country and have a government more concerned with the needs of the rich than the needs of the rest of the planet.

I suggest that instead of being a thick skulled conservative American you actually take some time to look into what scientists really think. Here's a good start:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scienti...climate_change
With the July 2007 release of the revised statement by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, no remaining scientific body of national or international standing is known to reject the basic findings of human influence on recent climate.
    Anything else?
