Had my iPod video 30gb for over a year now, no problems.
Payed 45$ for a protective casing for it, dropped it well over 20 times. Casing still fine, ipod still fine.
The headphones don't actually break. When you change the different sound effects in the ipod settings, it messes up the headphones, and it won't work with the ipod again, but they will most likely work with anything else perfectly.
I've dropped my Classic quite a few times without a case, pretty dinted now but still works just fine :P
