How to spot a psychopath
From Broadmoor to boardroom, they're everywhere, says Jon Ronson, in an exclusive extract from his new book
There is always a huge risk if you attempt to label people, personally I've learned a lot about mental illnesses and such, I'm constantly surrounded by people who hear voices, try to commit suicide, threaten people to kill them (including myself) etc.
It's very easy to get drawn to a negative view on people, we hear all the time about schizophrenics killing people, suicidal people should be protected and let alone people who actually say they will kill someone.
Does this mean they will actually do those things? Well some do, most don't however, this doesn't mean they don't do any damage. But at the end of the day, don't we all do damage to others, we've all hurt someone at some point in our life and just said "fuck him/her, he/she deserved it", showing no remorse of hurting someone.
We are a selfish people, we can care a great deal about some people and simply not give a crap about other people.
So yeah where is that line?
The biggest question is how important is it to talk about labels, obviously when there is real risk we need to step in, but do we really want to start diagnosing everyone? Not to mention that I don't think it will do any good if we would. People will abuse labels, if people think you are crazy, you might as well act it and blame all your mistakes on it, that way you will never have to take responsibility.
In the end this world is extremely imperfect and bad things will happen, whether they are murderers or bankers, they can hurt us, but we can't lock everyone up, so unless someone is a real danger, the best way to deal with it is the way you deal with everyone else.
Apparently I'm a psychopath! The problem with this is whole argument is labeling people as "Normal" But....What is Normal??
normal is based on opinion, IMO.
Quite a read, extremely interesting, I took an online test and appairently I got:
You scored between six (6) and twenty-one (21). This indicates that you probably have a criminal background, but one that does not include felonies. If you "deviant" score is eleven (11) or more but your "narcissist" score is nine (9) or less, you were probably a high suicide-risk inmate.
Analysis:
You scored 8% on Psychopath, higher than 27% of your peers.
But then again that's an online test and you test yourself, so you can't really trust it, cus lets say I AM a psychopath, wouldn't that make me have really high self worth, in other words I would give myself better points than I would actually have? xD
Psychopath lean towards "obsession", which is something even "normal" ppl can have. Does that mean everybody's a psychopath?
Can't believe this Jon guy didn't figure that out...
If you aren't weird then you are boring.
:)
or not normal
Dont believe this!
Mental is trying to make you distance yourself from the world of 'love' where all psychopaths give you as much love as you need. We should actually be named 'Dr Peace' or something.
With the family I have im pretty sure I can do that already.
Everybody recognizes parts of mental illnesses in themselves. The question is, how many and how strong are they.
The handbook for psychiatry, the DSM IV, has a list of certain characteristics that are well known for people with that mental illness, say there are 10 things, then you need like 6 or 7 before they can diagnose you with it.
On top of that, it has to do with how strong is it, for example narcissists think they are the greatest ever. Just because you sometimes think you are the greatest person alive, does not mean you are a narcissist. However when you really do think all the time you are the greatest person ever, then yeah you better check the other things on the list.
I just watched the movie 'The roommate', and if i should believe the movie, it actually is starting when someones obsessed to something. It could be anything from a person to a videogame, they either want to keep the person for themselfs or they want to 'roleplay' the videogame.
