Mayans sure did know stuff about planets the sun etc. but this is based on that their way to count the time ends in 2012? The same way our year ends just that our year is only 365 days and theirs were thousands of years! And as someone said, it barely mean (their way) that it'll be a new beginning!
As for how long we've been here humans have been here like 25,000 years, 120,000 years or 2,5 millon years (depending if you count Neandethals cromagnon or "lucy" as humans). And our world, the earth, has been here for 4,6 billon years.

Earth is not going to end in 2012.
Some scientist went deep into the Earth's history and crust to find out how long we actually have left. Earth will still exist in 5 billion years time. Because in 5 billion years time, the sun will explode and turn into a supernova which will wipe out the Solar System. The Bible also predicted (apparently) the assassination of JFK, 9/11, the attempted assassination of Ronald Regan and many other important dates in our lifetime. The Bible also said that in 2006, the Koreans would mess up a Nuclear missle program which would wipe out the world (or half of it). But here we are in 2008, still not dead. So all these little claims that we're gonna die in 2012 are completely wrong. Not everyone is right, keep that in mind...
