I believe the distinction you're looking at there is between 'micro-evolution' (tiny changes animals make over the course of several generations to adapt to changes in their environment/predators/etc, which can be observed today and shown in experiments over short periods of time with simple organisms) and 'macro-evolution' (entirely new species or genera developing or higher orders of change, which can only be evidenced through interpretation of the fossil record and related sources of information).

Here's a tip, read through previous posts if you want to start a debate.

Good looks does help survival. Let's consider reproduction chances of a girl that ugly you'd think you'll get a disease just from being near her. Not so good. If she does get a partner, though, it'll most likely be someone equally handicapped in looks or someone who's blind or with a similar defect. While the ugly ones mate with each other, pretty ones do the same, and that's the basis of the article.

take a step back and actually look at society

lets take myself as an example, i have an attractive partner and while we are both far from perfect we are concious of how we look and how we behave etc we are both well educated and i like to think good people now our children will follow in this as thats the environment they will be brought up in

now take a chav for example or my neighbours to be specific, they are uneducated fools, thick as pig shit and they dont seem to care how they look at all, their lifestyle ruins their bodies and they are at best ugly as sin, they are exactly the kind of person my children would stay away from

exactly - evolution basically means "survival of the fittest". In ye olde cavemenne tymes, it meant choosing a partner who fit/strong/good at hunting and so the weedy ones didnt get a partner and their crap genes stopped.

in modern times, who picks a partner based on their hunting skills? We don't need to. Now, like someone said, we choose partners based on aesthetics - for example, there are two women willing to marry you and you can only choose one. The first woman is very intelligent and has no history of mental/physical illness, but is ugly as hell. The second woman is also very intelligent and also has no history of mental/physical illnesses, but is extremely attractive.

Which would you go for?

Chances are you'd go for the second woman - they're exactly the same but the second woman is just more attractive than the first woman. So you mate and [im basing this on you being halfway attractive as well] and have kids and because of the genes they got from you both, they turn out to be pretty clever and good-looking. And then they grow up, and they get given a choice of two people to marry, the only difference being one is a lot more attractive than the other.

I personally think that the Orcs will consist of chavs, and the Elves will be, well, the rest of the human race. And there will be no chance of them mixing but lets face it, what self-respecting person would marry someone with the IQ of a dead amoeba when they could have someone decent? :P

Some people in this thread seem to be missing the point that 'survival' is not so narrowly defined as just physical strength/ability to survive against physical/environmental problems. For social animals including humans, beneficial social traits such as being able to communicate well in social settings and being able to present oneself in an attractive way (attractiveness is not all about 'looks') is just as important, if not more important than, being physically stronger than a potential rival. Also different in humans when comparing to lower order animals, is the measurement of being a 'good provider'. In lower animals this equates to being able to protect one's family from harm (so usually the biggest, strongest, fastest, most agile etc). Regardless of attractiveness in other respects, the ability to provide in humans is usually measured more by wealth and social standing (if you're really young or really old [err.. old and not rich lol]) then you probably have less provider attractiveness because very young people have a harder time getting well-paying jobs, and older people... well, they die sooner :P And of course there are a number of other factors which could be evaluated (subconsciously or consciously) to make up one's attractiveness as a potential family provider.

It only makes sense. We all are very far offsprings from an African women who lived a long, long time ago (maybe). We evolve into the different races which exist today because of geological location to get used to the climate and atmosphere. Now further into the future we will seperate based on our choice of partners. The smarter only get smarter, and the stupid only get more stupid. The pretty become prettier, and the ugly become more ugly. Now, personally, i think there will still be those in the middle, because human genetics aren't absolute. Smart and pretty people still have the chance to produce a defect child. The stupid and ugly still have a chance to reproduce a less stupid and less ugly child.

So, I think that having 2 absolute sub-species is impossible and will not happen. Unless a law was made to make the pretty and smart people move to one side of the world, and the ugly and stupid to move to the other side. Only if we have no contact with each other at all. There will always be smart/pretty people who would take an ugly/stupid person, no matter how small the percentage is.

Saying that every human would choose an attractive person over a non-attractive person is kidding yourself. We are human, not machines.

So.... No ones seen that movie Gattica? Everyone seems to be forgetting about genetic engineering and designer babies. It's happening now in very small numbers, but say 20-30 years from now it will be a common place...

That's pretty strange as i was talking about something similar the other day. Without sounding harsh to anyone but I said to a mate that alot of places I go now you either find really attractive women or erm, less fortunate looking women (nothing inbetween). I said eventually both physically and mentally there would be a massive gulf between humans in general because of evolution.

Wonder what my kids will turn out to be like......

I've for a long time seriously thought the dimwitted shouldn't have kids for the good of mankind. Actually I'm a little disappointed my gf isn't smarter (not to say she's dumb or anything, not at all :P), because I hope if I can't make a breakthrough in any area, my child(ren) would, but well perhaps her genes would work towards more beautiful kids than mine, and I wouldn't want geniuses if they don't look good.

It'd just be so damn useless to be average.

I disagree.

In my opinion, as humans we live to enjoy the life we have been given and make the most out of it. You shouldn't think about the meaning of life as being obligated to ensure a happy life for others, although it would be very helpful, it really isn't the point.

Live your life to the fullest and enjoy every second of it. For some people that includes helping others, and for those people intelligence matters & is important.

Also, intelligence isn't something you're born with for the most part. It's the way you are raised. Haven't you noticed that every child you see is (seemingly) very curious and eager to learn about everything? If as a parent you feed that need properly then your child will grow to become a very curious, insightful, eager-to-learn person. Also, schools usually diminish this curiosity by setting a specific set of material without letting the children experiment and lean by asking questions.
Although I agree that some of the intelligence you are born with takes part in your overall intelligence, it's a very small portion of your complete intelligence.

Well as you said, it's your opinion and I think otherwise. You're mistaken though if you think I care about other people's happiness, that's not it. I just want my own ass to be as comfortable as possible and its not that unless I put all my potential into good use. Anyhow knowledge and technology is the salvation, after all we must learn to escape planet earth before sun expands and burns it all or a disaster destroys it even sooner.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if there's anything to disagree with. You and I just seem to have different goals in life, that's all.

Btw, I know enough about intelligence and that it's not completely genetic, however a part of it seems to be so. Also, unarguably smart parents tend to raise their children to be smart aswell and vice versa, be it genetic or not. As for the topic, this in mind I totally support the given theory.
