Now, what if English wasn't the international language, how would the english and american people be? Today we see them as the "standard" people, but what if Scandinavian was the international etc. Of Spanish?

We can only guess and I don't dare do it :P
    Why would they "have" to?
Why would you "have" to learn french because it's widely spoken (which it is) :)

Personally - the more languages I speak the better! but I would never think any less of someone just because they dont speak (or want to speak) my language - however:
French people are proud of their language, and even if they know English some of them will not speak it - I respect that *if I'm in France :)* - I'll adapt. But to force other people to do the same is a bit silly in my opinion.

French is a way too hard language, unpractical and outdated. English ftw.

Maybe english is easier and "more practical". but some languages, like french, allow you to be more expressive :)

an international language is supposed to be an easy language everyone understands that allows basic and advanced discussions with the lowest ambiguity possible. If you want to be more expressive you have to find someone who has the patience to learn the language.

Cantonese = Spoken by a small amount of people off the south coast of China, AKA Hong Kong.
Mandarin = Will rule the world one day.

Anyone who claimed english was the most common first language would be wrong. But it is the most common second lang, as well as being used for most international communications including air traffic control, world conferences etc...

Simplified English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Basic English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Special English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But I think this is what some people are talking about:
English is the current lingua franca of international business and air traffic control, and has displaced French as the lingua franca of diplomacy since World War II. It arguably was advanced by the role of English-speaking countries, in particular the United States, in the aftermath of the war.

to be french i can guarantee you that english is better :/
It is more simple, you can learn the english language to be understand in 4 years in school, but the french language, even with 7 years, it is still difficult. Speaking in french is only useful in order to seduce, itil like that language is made for it :) that is all ^^

english is one of the hardest languages to learn.

and all thoes who think we'll be speaking mandarin right now, you have to remember that for that to happen then china would have had to discovered the other countries, which it didn't. Just cos a language is the most spoken, doesn't mean that everyone has to learn it.

Even though I speak Danish as my first language, I accept that we have ONE language where we can all communicate. If the French don't wish to speak english, they must understand that people don't wanna make any kind of bussiness with them.
That's the same if a german comes to Denmark and starts speaking german to me. Should I start speaking danish to him and expect him to understand my language?
Hell no!!! I learned german and if I'm in germany I MIGHT bother speaking their language, but I believe it's bad morale. I don't expect anyone to learn my language. I like English and everyone should simply understand that we can't learn each others lang.

this is such a ridiculous sentence that I'm actually going to put it on my msn PM.

almost all verbs in english conjugate in only 2 ways:

    I play
    You play
    He plays
    we play
    you play
    they play

    now in portuguese

    Eu jogo
    tu jogas
    ele joga
    nós jogamos
    vós jogais
    eles jogam

in spanish it's almost the same

    in french

    je joue
    tu joues
    il joue
    nous jouons
    vous jouez
    ils jouent

    Not to mention the "á à é è ê ã õ ô ó ò í ì" that doesn't exist in english and the grammar that is much more difficult in other languages.

If English wasn't the international language ... The World Would Be A Far Sadder Place Since English Poons.

The Reason English Is So Hard Is Because We Have Words That Have No Relevance To What They Are Describing - For Example.

Cupboard - Cup Board - A Board For A Cup? NO You Silly Little Foreigner - It Means A Storage Compartment That Is Used To Store Household Stuff.

English is one of the simplest languages, since German, french and spanish all have english words somewhere in their dictonary, how ever Germans dont have french words do they?

In My Opinion, englsih is rahter easy, compared to some that have no connection with english whatsoever. Even Estonian is harder than english.

And Neculin, why not russian? because a) russian is ass-hard to learn.
and b) because it does sounds gay(at last to me)

nad if the international language would be something else, we would probably be talking why not english as international language for example.
Don't mean to kill this thread tho :P
