Indian woman gives birth at age of 70

Rajo Devi, who married 50 years ago, gave birth to a baby girl on November 28, and is now thought to be the world's oldest new mother.

Dr Anurag Bishnoi, a doctor at the Hisar fertility centre in Haryana state, said: "Rajo Devi and (her husband) Bala Ram approached the centre for treatment and the embryo transfer was done on April 19.

"Both the mother and child are in good health."

A 67-year-old Spanish woman who had twins in 2006 was thought to have been the previous oldest mother.

Devi's husband, aged 72, had also wed his wife's sister after 10 years of his first marriage did not result in children. His second wife also failed to become pregnant.

It was not clear whose egg and sperm were used in the successful treatment.

Dr Bishnoi, who helped the couple realise their dream, said both the mother and child were in good health.

"IVF has revolutionised the way we look at infertility," said Mr Bishnoi. "Infertility is no longer a social taboo or a divine curse. It can be treated scientifically."

"Adriana Iliescu, a retired university lecturer in Romania, was the oldest woman to have given birth. She delivered at the age of 66 in 2006. Maria Del, a Spanish woman, gave birth by the IVF treatment at the age of 67. And now, Rajo Devi has become the oldest woman to have given birth and the first woman in her seventies to do so," claimed Dr Bishnoi.

"Another woman of her age is reported to have delivered a child at Muzzafarnagar, but she was previously fertile," he added.

New mother Rajo Devi, "We longed for a child all these years and now we are very happy to have one in the twilight years of our life."

Husband Ram said he wasn't worrying over who would look after the child if they died.

"The upbringing of the child is not a problem. We have a joint family as is common in rural Haryana," he said.

The couple said they were facing social stigma for being childless for the last 55 years.

"We used the usual intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique in her case. The ICSI method enables even poor quality sperms being used creating embryos," said Dr Bishnoi.

He said his parents and wife, all doctors, performed the procedure together. "The major concern for us was that in case the woman conceived twins, she may not be able to carry them through the full term of pregnancy. In that case, all over efforts would have failed and the woman's life would have been in danger," Bishnoi said.

To avoid multiple pregnancies, the doctors used blastocyst culture, where a single potential embryo is transferred to the uterus instead of the normal two to three embryos. "This embryo is transferred after five days in this technique, while in normal cases it is done in two-three days," he added.

"Rajo is the eldest of four siblings. She is elder to me by about 16 years. We all prayed she would get a child and even married our other sister to Bala Ram in this hope. Now the whole family is very happy that she has a child," said Chand Ram, Rajo Devi's brother who is a sub inspector in Haryana Police at Panchkula.

Didn't feel like reading the article, so I thought the title was enough.
Though I'm pretty sure the female reproductive system usually can't be able to support a child from the age of 35~40.
    Yes?

That's not what I mean, though.
It's in no interest of how the baby got out, but isn't it PHYSICALLY impossible to have children after 35~40? At least normally. I've heard people who have children at 5x, but that's as high as I've heard of.
    Certainly not 70.

    Certainly not 70.
She had used a previously frozen egg. This however could have never been done naturally, as at the age of 40-50 women hit menopause, disallowing them release eggs; rendering them the possibility to have a baby.

This should be seriously illegal... i mean really, think about it, all the risks involved, and then what about the kids life, chances of the kid graduating with his/her parents there is extremely small.

This is completely wrong, if a woman can't get pregnant, then so be it, adopt, or do something weird, like live out the last few years of your life...

Btw imo women shouldn't get pregnant after 40, tbh under 35 would be best, the chances of deficiencies after that grow in a rapid rate.

My mum scoffed at this, she was like, "It probably a fake baby!!!" When my mum was growing up in Gujurat, she said she knew this woman who had a baby at 54, so yeah.

you start going through meopause at like 50,
you are able to concieve and have a baby at 40.
you are able to start having babies from about 28 days BEFORE your FIRST period.

My mom is 38 and she recently gave birth to my brother so that dissaproves the 35-40 theory.

Menopause actually hits 10 years before it actually starts as it is a slow process but naturally it is very difficult to conceive after 45 years of age.

I am all for children in later life as we have longer and longer lifespan but there has to be a limit surely. What is the chances they get to see the child grow into a teenager? =/

Re: Indian woman gives birth at age of 70

Imo it is barely their kid, in one respect the egg and sperm didn't come from them, in the other they will be dead before they really get the chance to bring the child up. Nature vs nurture? They will fail at both.

I feel really sorry for the child, what kind if childhood will it have? Its parents will be too old to really take care of it, play sports etc. That's if they do live along enough to get to that point, otherwise it will be a orfen before it knows what hit it. Though I think there is a good chance it will be taken into state custody anyway, seriously there are not very many 70+ year olds that can take care of themselves let alone a kid!

Would be a curious situation to have a brother/sister that's... 40+ younger than you.... let alone that child being the (grand) aunt/uncle of someone... :o

Edit: Above poster... read the bit "Joint family"

Exactly, the only ones that follow that theory is the people that haven't had a girlfriend or ever talked with a women.

That is why is called "theory".

    Off-Topic

And TBH <---- The phrase, is not cool.

Don't use it to act cool or to shorten your grammar.

Besides the obvious extreme ages, it is mainly for me that the risks increase the older you get, if you check the parents of the kids with a mental disability, then there is a big chance that the mother was over 35 (and a even bigger increase after 40), if you want kids then it really isn't a good idea to wait after 35 to get them.
