Nothing to be worried of really.
Believe me, internet will be censored in the future and not even maybe too far in the future -.-
Well, hopefully it doesn't go further than this, even though that's just naive to think. Maybe it's time to go underground then. Just a matter of time before they start fucking over sites like RZ etc -.-
Most likely, but hopefully it will take a while before this goes through, considering the fact that RZ is in russia and SOPA is for the US then this doesn't apply anyone outside of the US really, the question is just when europe etc decides to follow the US with SOPA, that's when websites like RZ might get blocked by ISP's so ppl can't access.
Even though there will be ways of getting to the site anyway it won't be as conventional as now and it will loose RZ a lot of users.
Well they start with this, then it goes to shutting down torrents for movies, songs, programs, games, etc. Because if you look at it, that is the same thing because you are stealing someone else's idea or taking advantage of their work without paying for it.
And while that might seem fair to some who are ridiculously righteous about this crap, it may then also spread onto sites such as YouTube where harmless videos will be removed for having copyrighted material. Have you ever seen a video that uses a song as the background music? That might be deemed illegal, deleted, and the person prosecuted because the company that owns the song did not give consent for it to be used.
tl;dr: You might tell yourself that you use the internet in a way that seems right to you without the intent to steal or break any laws, but if they have their way the internet as you know it today will cease to exist. You are being told censorship will be used to protect intellectual property, but when has the government kept their word and not gone overboard? Exactly.
No it's not the same thing. Not at all. Those sites as far as it tells us. Are SELLING knock-offs of some one elses creation. That has little if anything do to with censor ship imo.
The censor ship people are so hard pressed on fighting for has more so to do with downloading stuff they didn't pay for, and shouldn't even have in the first place.
Even though I'm one of those people, I really couldn't care if it passes or not. People are just massively butthurt over the bill because they won't(more or less) be able to get stuff without paying for it, as easily. For people who use the internet for more legit reasons, they'll be effected little if any.
This has already been happening. I uploaded a little video I made to photobucket like a year ago to share with a personal friend (not even anyone else) and it told me before it finished uploading it that it would not due to some illegal contents.
I've seen videos taken off of youtube for the music contents as well just not as often because I think they do it by specific complaints, but still, it has been happening little by little.
This is just the beginning, in the end, it will all be only for big companies, leaving no chances for individuals.
Pirates/Hackers that don't work for the government but work for internet's freedom are highly reputed to be better than those that works for the government, that's why I'm not worrying that much, but hey maybe they'll all get me wrong, I just don't think they will.
That's where you're wrong. It's impossible to 100% control the internet. It's a part of free will. You can censor it as much as you want, there will always be the few who are willing to go the extra mile to avoid such things. and it's easily avoidable. The internet wasn't created by a single person and it damn sure won't be completely controlled by one.
I don't see how this ruling is even feasible, let alone possible, for any social network or search engine to do, not to mention international boundaries. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for someone to complain that nothing has been done.
Not too worried to be honest.
