That's true, but your metabolism also slows down when you sleep. So that energy is not being used up, but stored for later use. aka fat. Now doing that every once in a while wont change anything, but eating late night after night, will sure pack on some pounds.
Wrestlers often go on the reverse diet. In which they eat full meals for breakfast. (steak dinners exc.) salad and a yogurt for lunch, then a bowl of cereal for supper. Just because you burn off all of that energy during the day. That might not be the healthiest way to diet, but it sure gets the job done. Now if you don't work out to stay fit after losing the weight of course, you'll just gain it right back.
while it is true your metabolism is slower at night there isn't a huge difference
if you eat at night regularly, as i do due to the time i finish work etc your body wont store or any less fat than it normally would
with regards to cutting weight if it is not done in the healthiest way then it shouldnt be desireable for everyday living, sure it works cutting for weigh ins but that is sport specific
for average joe it makes little to no difference, provided they remain active
however going for long periods of food through the day and binging at night would certainley have adverse effects
At the end of the day it depends on how active THAT person is. For example, if your the type that doesn't like to make the effort to go out that often and stays in the house most the time. (couch potato) Then eating late at night will only have a negative effect.
If your out most the day, especially if you have a job thats physically demanding. Eating really late at night won't be so bad at all because you'll only be replacing your bodies nutrients that you lost during the day. But after saying this, I'd personally only recommend that you eat something light. Such as a bowl of cereal.
And as Exy said when it comes to dieting it MUST be done properly or not at all. This is simply because dieting in the wrong way only damages your body especially your metabolism in the long run. A very common way for alot of people these days to diet is by starvin them self, making them selfs suffer through long hunger periods...Because the after effect of doing that constantly, makes your stomach smaller and your metabolism crash at a fast rate.
Once that happens your just in a danger zone, because if you skip meals constantly in a attempt to diet you'll only pack on all that weight again + more for messing about with your body if you chose to eat as you once use to do.
