    wink Martial Arts

    MARTIAL ARTS

Not sure if you would consider this as a sport, but anyways - do you do Martial Arts? If so, which one(s) do you do?

I've started Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, it's almost been a year now. I've done Karate in the past but dropped it as I was moving states! Really enjoy TKD and H! Anyone else? :3

You dont learn shit from youtube without a teacher to correct you. You may get the moves but I would take a large bet that your form sucks ass. No offense but thats just how it is when you dont ahve a face to face teacher to show you how to properly punch or execute a move (Ive been there, I tried submissions i learned from the internet. They are damn near impossible if you dont know what you are doing) and you never will know what you are doing with out a teacher to show you how to fluidly move about your techniques. You may have a 1 up on everybody who has never taken a formal martial art but if you stumble across somebody who does or ever has, then you may be fucked.

@ot I take Taido, BJJ, Judo, grappling, a little k1 here and there, and jisen (Japanese sparing). Ya I have a broad mix xD

^I'd have to agree. The presence, instruction, and mentor-ship Masters provide = priceless. How you would learn it successfully by yourself is appalling, unless you're trying to invent a new martial arts, lol

Now granted I will say I have learned some things from watching vids but it wasnt until I got onto the mat and practiced them with friends/instructors that I really mastered anything. and the things i learned from watching the vid i spent atleast a month watching once a day and practicing them once a week.

its an amazing sport. VERY well mixed with jiujitsu and bjj. Ive been doing a judo/bjj/jiujitsu/grappling mix since I was 11 so almost 7 years now. It has actually saved my life twice. A valued skill to have to say the least.

Have been doing Muay Thai and BJJ for the past year or so, and so far I'm absolutely loving it.

Haven't really competed other than sparring and the occasional fight practise with one of our club's competing members, but yeah, its great for you and its a heap of fun.

Wonderful mix and a good workout too. I have heard muay thai is rough when you first start.

I had know idea what arnis was and so I went on a hunt for it. I love it. the only thing I found wrong was all of the sparing videos were in heave assed pads. It seemed like their range was rather limited. It seems like an amazing sport it just seems rather restrained for sparing

Black belt in Karate (about 4.5 years) and 2nd dan Black belt in Muay Thai (roughly 5.5 years). I first started martial arts in 1995, when i was 6.

I had to stop about 5 years back, due to breaking the same ankle twice in 6 months. I really regretted it but after 6 months out of action, i was in no shape to get back into it, not with my last year of High-School coming up.

Well it's technically a mix between street fighting and wrestling, but yes, it's a Martial Art.

Not the best. They teach only towards power not towards form. My friend takes it. While they have a kick that can drop someone if it connects to their head, they will most likely fall over if they miss. His balance has never been worked on and hes hurt himself sparing with me because they dont spend much time on the form of the kicks and punches. Its all about rapid succession and power with them.

    Re: Martial Arts

I've done Wushu for 5-6 years. Starting when I was 10 till 16. I've quit for a year now, since it lost it's appeal to me and I feel like sleeping whenever training comes. The instructor also lost his aim and would rather earn more money with new branches than focusing on us.

Used to be able to do the splits, but I can't stretch for shit now.

I'm also Green 2 for Taekwondo. But that was when I was 7-8 :P

    Re: Martial Arts

Great to see other martial artists on here :)

I have trained in Shukokai karate, freestyle karate, kickboxing, muay thai, japanese + brazillian jujitsu and boxing. I've competed in sport karate (semi and light contact), kickboxing and muay thai from national to international level. I am a 3rd dan and I've been training a total 17 years now.

I think everyone can benefit from training in the martial arts.

On the subject of online martial arts I've been playing around with a new youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/traintillyoudrop I will be uploading more videos and going into high quality soon. I will keep my videos straight forwards and easy to understand, subscribe if you like the sound of it as I will be doing a lot of work on this channel in the next few months.

    Re: Martial Arts

So after training with my co-worker and his wife for about a month in bjj (I have had prior experience and what not) I found out that his wife was the us champion for 12 years and has competed in the olympics (and I think won medals)
    I was like "WHAT???"
