Metalheads=Satanists?

Well, yeah.. I get that pretty a lot, that "Anyone who listens to Rock/Metal is surely a satanist" thing.

Just a couple of days back, the coach at the gym comes up and asks me:"What the hell's that?", I'm all like:"Huh? What?", and then he points at the skull-thing pendant I'm wearing. So I tell em it's just the a damn pendant what's the big deal? And then he says "You're a metal fan, aren't you. What, are you a satanist or something?" All I could do is just laugh at his face and say that it kills me that everytime people automatically link metal music, and leather clothes, and skulls and all that to satanism.

Not so long ago, I remember some guy on another forum I visit told something about him listening to metal loudly on a break at work, and then one of his co-workers runs in and is all like "oh my god, what is this satanist music you're listening to?"

And not only that. Lots of times, when you walk down the street or at school or whatever, and people can tell you're a metal fan just by you're looks, there's a good chance that you'll get kids shouting at you "Hey, there a freak" or "Look out, The cult of Satan is coming through!"

Things is, I wanna know WHY. Why the hell people always link this kind of stuff with satanism and all that crap? When I told my parents about the coach-incident, they just said, well he's probably religious so he's got this way of thinking. But hell, Dave Mustaine from Megadeth has become religious as hell, and still, he's fine all the skulls and the loud music.

So why all these prejudices? Discuss. :P

Btw, it's not a note, it's a chord.. a Tri-tone. Because it sounded sort-of unpleasant to the common ear in the middle-ages, people called the "The Devil in Music", and for some time, it was actually forbidden by the church for composers to use these chords in their music.

But trust me, the common person nowadays doesn't even KNOW what a NOTE is, not to mention what a chord is, and types of chords, so I don't think it's got anything to do with the tri-tone.

I've grown to be pretty big and I guess somewhat threating-looking, and as the years passed, I don't really look like a metalhead at first anymore, so people don't say that stuff to me anymore. But what bothered me at the moment I started this thread, and still bothers me from time to time, is why do people see the common metalhead as an outsider, and kinda try to stay away, as if they were diseased? I just don't get it, they educate us at school "to accept the different and respect other opinions, but still, it is not so as they tried to teach us

I don't, tbh. But dunno, I started the thread at one of those moments that I wonder about different stuff, and then I just think "why is it like that?". Just some stuff I thought of at that moment. But yeah, I guess I should pay less attention to that.

I'm a metalhead but I look far from it. I wear band t-shirts from time to time and I got a pair of studs bracelets. I think most people call it satanist music cause the growling make no sense what so ever at first. But it's like Gohan says. People will always judge so fuck what others think.

Well I must say that there are indeed satanic subgengres/bands that tend to sound like satanists.. But that's mostly just to strengthen their 'shocking' image. Most of them or just anti-christian bands, or anti-religion in general. But judging the whole metalscene as satanic is just stupid >_>.

i get called a goth quite often...mainly because people have heard of goths. people just see the long hair and black cloths and immitiately stereotype. i usually just ask why they thing im a goth then laugh when they say 'i just do' or 'you look like a goth'

It's just like Sturgis. Sturgis is one of the largest if not the largest biker rally in the United States. People drive their motorcycles from across America. When you get there everyone just looks like a "biker dude" big bulky and ready to beat up anyone...

When the truth is most of them are doctors/dentists/lawyers. Just goes to show now to judge people by how they look.

Guess this whole Satanist thing is regional or something, that's the last thing people call metalheads here(in lithuania), well maybe the old ppl would,but when there are skinheads and other morrons to be more afraid of, they don't bother, and neither does anyone else.

Also the dumber and deeply religous people tend to label us as satanists, simply because we don't believe in god, and our appearance just screams that to them. Thus they go apeshit and start the whole AMG SATAN SON crap. Not like anyone should care about what vacuum for brains people say though.

I dress nothing like the "typical" metal type and yet I have a good amount of metal on my Zune. In fact people would probably guess I listen to either classical rock or hiphop depending on the way i dress, and yet thats what i have the least of on my Zune.
