Only when the US greatly outnumbered the North Koreans did they start winning battles - this was even before the intervention of Chinese and Soviet forces. (Note that the only thing the Soviets did was send a relatively small number of Mig-15's to fly under Chinese colours)
Thereafter, the Chinese moved into North Korea, and fought the US forces a couple of times, as a warning. The US, ofcourse, didn't understand the meaning, and thought the Chinese had retreated because of weakness...
So as the US continued, the Chinese had enough, and delivered such blows to the American armies, that they had to retreat all the way to the south of Seoul...
Eventually the Americans managed to fight back to roughly the current border, and little changed after that.
Note that the Chinese, at this point, only had infantry, and no heavy support at all, against loads of tanks, artillery, and aircraft.
