Nothing if there are no visible hurts. Also its more or less "ok" if the child is under 16 years old. They call it "Züchtigungsrecht" ( dunno the english word for that ... )

German right is strange. You get 5 years for copying software but only 2 years with Reinforcement ( dunno if thats the correct translation for beeing free but if you do something wrong again you have to go to jail for the old thing plus the new thing )

Just because they are over or under 16 yrs old it is not ok. Discipline is one thing child abuse is another.

True. But when you are 15 or younger no one will do anything if there is no visible proof for it. Btw i have 2 sons and 2 daughters and i NEVER whould beat them. If one of em whould steal something ( doesnt matter if its 1 €/US$ or 1 million €/US$ ) i whould not beat em. I whout try to talk to them that they give it back and apologize ( if the police isnt doing something ).

I would beat my kids. Step out of line and you will get beaten, my kids will learn and fear that just as i did in my youth. However, there is a huge difference between parental discipline and child abuse.

No there isn't. Beating children is inherently disproportionate and a sign of poor parenthood. Of course it's abuse, you are beating a child.

Being brought-up in a western family is very different from being brought up in any other family.

The difference in cultures between the eastern and western worlds can all simply be traced down to parenting techniques. If your parents are eastern, you will grow up an obedient child who always follows instructions and fears being back-handed by your father. That's the way it has always been, and that's the way it always will be.

Western children on the other hand believe that they have the authority instead, and that they have rights which allow them to do what they want, when they want. Forget about laying a hand on them, simply raise your voice and they are already dialing children's aid. How are you supposed to bring up a child when they are calling the shots instead of you?

Well my point of view on this is rather hmmm how should i say it. Old fashioned. If the case may have been that i have stolen anything from my "real" parents (which i obviously did as a lil kid couse i wanted some ice or summin) i would get beaten , and i mean badly beaten , and believe me i do think that is what was good for me. On a sidenote if i would of have been 15 and my mothers BF would of have hit me for 3pounds dollars hell even tacos i would of have hit back, no matter the consequences. Couse tbh in that case a tell of by him should of have been the max you get dished out, and maybe a warm welcoming slap or maybe 2 from your mom to it. He in no right has the authority to hit / assault you. I am a smartass so i would go to him give him 5 pounds and say "keep the change fuker" and just walk away. Now if he hits you couse of that, then comes the police ^^.

Bear in mind this is me. and not really an advise but the way things work in the former eastern block of europe.

I said nothing about smacking, and neither did you. We were talking about beating. Beating carries much stronger connotations than smacking. Don't try changing the goalposts.

Ironically, a recent survey found that 7 out of 10 British parents use corporal punishment on their kids so this cultural divide shit is nonsense. You are generalising to an almost offensive level. Growing up I knew plenty of 'westerners' who bowed to authority and plenty of 'easterners' who were disobedient shits, and of course vice versa. I also have 'eastern' friends who weren't smacked as children, and I have white friends who were. It's such a mixed bag that all I can do is laugh at how preposterous your post is.

I've got to agree with what both of these said, the finest example I can give is of my own household. Both me and my sister were raised differently (from where my father left and step-dad came) and we're both completely different types of people. I grew up where if I did something wrong I'd expect a smack for it and a stern talking too, my sister just got yelled at (obviously I didn't receive a full blown punch to the face or anything like that). There's not a huge age gap between us, but the attitude from both of us is completely different, I'm respectful to to elders, I'm polite and I'd like to think I'm a nice person. My sister on the other hand is a complete cunt, she shows no respect to anyone, she'll sulk if she doesn't get her own way and she will cheek back to anyone even if she's in the wrong. It's even showed a difference academically and my sister isn't stupid. Personally, if my future children misbehaved I wouldn't hesitate to give them a smack and tell them off.

Meh, I don't even think the word assault is appropriate here. All the guy did was push him down, and cover his mouth.. When I hear the word assault, I think that he was beaten (punched, kicked, etc).

Also, as I said many times before, it's not the amount that he stole that matters. It's the idea that he was willing to steal something and think that there would be no consequences.
