    New router, better net!

Just set up my new router today, and got a nice speed boost.

ISP had upgraded the local DSLAM's, so they supported 30MB cable instead of the previous 17MB. They sent me a new router, and now I'm getting a max speed of 3.1mb/s as compared to the 2.2mb/s i was getting earlier.

Hooray for having a nice ISP for once!

    You and your technicalities :P

Yes, it's a cable modem, but it also has routing capabilities. Not all modems here do that, so i just call em routers. I'm obviously not referring to a CISCO unit sitting in my living room lol.

recently got unlimited ADSL2+ with TPG for $60/m, I'm about 3.7km from the exchange and get around 8Mbps out of the 24Mbps available on ADSL2+.

    which IS you with Rish?

    Bigpond Cable Elite.

I'm within 1.5k of the exchange, and there's less than 5 people in my whole suburb using Cable broadband, so i get my full 30MB line speed. It's great.

Bigpond used to be shit 6-7 years ago, people still like to moan and groan about them but they've become a solid contender while everyone else was looking the other way.

Been with them 4 years, in that time my net has never had anymore than 24 hours of downtime, in total. As for the speed... I'd like to see anyone get 3.1mb/s on ADSL2+.

Was just curious :P. Newer modems esp. firmwares are capable of higher bandwidths than previous modems, but most routers/switches/hubs are limited to 10/100/1000, and an upgrade from 100 to 1000 wouldn't impact your experience (because you're still under 100) so I just figure it's the modem since modems aren't tiered like that :).
