**Bangalore, Aug 24 (ANI): The Levis Strauss has initiated an offer allowing the customers to buy its line of products and pay through monthly installments (EMI).
It's quite a leap forward. Keep in mind people in India generally get paid $100 a month so dishing out $50 for one pair of jeans is a little ridiculous. It's even ridiculous in the United States, but it's a fashion symbol.
The underlying problem with this is that you are required to have plastic to pay for the installments. That's right...you need a credit card. The Manager of Levi Strauss outlets in India has a deal to cut interest rates, etc for these installments.
The credit card companies are now targeting youth and low income families with these promises that they had fooled us the United States with long ago. The biggest contributing factor to the current global economic downturn was the increase in debt which caused people to be unable to pay off their loans and mortgages. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if they can do the same to this subcontinent or if someone will step in as a consumer advocate.
