The thing is, I don't care what race, religion or even what language you speak, as long as you are legally American. Although I only speak English, I am not going to kid myself and think that there's a certainty that it will ALWAYS be the main language or whatever; change happens.

My biggest problem with illegal immigrants (besides the fact they are breaking the law) is that they take jobs, government aid, and houses away from true Americans. In California the Governator is getting hassled because he was all for the border patrolers in Arizona (guys trying to keep illegal immigrants out). People actually find it a bad thing that someone (heaven forbid it the government try a bit harder) is trying to put the law down.

Of course Schwarzenegger was also for issuing driver's licenses to undocumented workers (non residents).

It's like no one wants to try anymore or can't be bothered enforcing the law. Is it a hard job? Of course. Are people trying to stop it? Of course. Is it a huge problem that needs more attention, more so than the latest sensation that Britney Spears is pregnant? What do you think.. People need to wake up and stop caring so much about Paris Hilton's sex videos..

Yup, Becky sure has the American public in view. Constitutionally, you must speak english. When I go to a gas station and try to buy some gas and can't communicate, this has happened to me a few times, we have a problem.

I heard of an amendment being proposed, but never heard of it being approved (U.S. Constitution). I know several states have English as the official language, or restrict funds/support for other language associations, etc. And some states do have "Enlgish only" laws as well... Which in the end, the states should have the ultimate decision (always been a pro-state person).

I believe the U.S. Supreme Court once overruled a case citing it an "unconstitutional violation of due process" to have english only laws... Though that was during WWI so times have changed of course (anti-German feelings then had more to do with it than anything)

But I hear yah youth, it gets really frustrating when I've had people call me up at work or at other jobs that speak Spanish and act like I'm the idiot for not understanding them 0_o

well i liked the MS proposal to increase the VISAS for working on the US :) since all the great minds are outside US eheheh and well its not good to see US corporations starting to lose their position

lol, yeah public schools in america REALLY arent very good compared to some other countries, so a lot of jobs are going to the "Better qualified" whether they're from here or not.

I guess I never understood that, but then again, I know next to nothing about other countries schools :P I do know that there are many good schools and many bad ones here.

The majority of the problem comes from people not wanting to pay more for education, as it's very hard to get funding in a lot of areas because people don't want more taxes (American's, by nature it seems, hate the idea of taxes) or because schools don't "benefit" them (Most people that vote, at least locally, are older people, who no longer have kids in school so they don't care).

There are other things to consider, of course, but the general problem is: People don't like to pay taxes and people vote far less in state/local elections/proposals/school taxes than they do for National elections; National turnouts are pretty low as well, however.

I avoid DISCUSSING politics cos I know a lot less than the ppl talking bout it. But I just wanted to show this:

aye it looks ok in figures like that but i know people who live in the poorer parts of manchester who are without the benefits they need when there are a ton of immigrants getting more

i understand and agree with you, but the problem occurs when people blame immigrants for this rather than a bad system of means testing or whatever by the government.

It is the governments fault that this is the way it is and it needs to be sorted.

Both sides are at fault. Immigrants know very well what they are doing is wrong, but they don't care. I don't blame the people from Mexico, however, as their leader hasn't cared about them in years. Correct me if I'm wrong :P However, it's not American's fault... You don't see Canadians rushing in (btw, I love Canada. Beautiful place and very pleasant people from my experience).

I do know that the U.S. has actually received grief from other countries for trying to make it harder to be an American citizen.. Go figure.

I see your point Becky, but im referring more to those who need the benefits rather than those who dont. Unfortunately all immigrants get tarred by the same brush. And so many people just believe what they see in the media.

But your right, many immigrants do take advantage of the weak system in place in the UK. But like I said, its a shame that those who need the benefits, or those coming over to work, get as much blame as those who exploit the system.

I feel for those that need help, I really do. But there are so many people that need help that ARE (in my case, American) legal citizens that are pushed to the side or if they are so lucky to get aid actually will get LESS then some immigrants. It also amazes me how some agencies will give different amounts per race, not on basis of what kind of job the people may have or kids; but race 0_o

Living in Michigan, I'll tell you, it's probably one of the worst areas for this to occur... Three Governors ago (head of State) they pretty much made the Welfare system so easy that people forgot what it was like to work.. Ok that's going into another area, but it's still the same kind of boat..

One of my best friends has this "funny" story to tell about how when she was younger, her mom needed a little help aid wise.

She (her mother), had 3 kids and no father present, got a certain amount (I can't really remember tbh). Right next door (cubicles seperated each social worker), she heard a lady (Mexican, my friends mom was white), who had 2 kids and had the same sort of circumstance (don't know about a father) get 3x as much as her for aid (Food stamps, as they were called). Maybe there was more to it, that I don't know.

Whether or not that still happens today (was probably 10 years ago?) I dunno... Apparently her mom said something about it and the social worker really didn't know what to say..
