going back to EVE online. its pretty expensive to play it but its well worth it. server is up all of the time apart from the daily downtime of an hour. the whole game feels well made and well balanced. as sarduakar said the skill training scheme works well. its the only game ive played that the player level doesnt increase with hours in game. as of yet there are no private servers for it but theres a really cool emulator project whoch looks promising. private servers ftl
Tbh official servers really are the only way to go, RZ Mir2 and Soma are the only MMO's I've enjoyed more than official servers and I think that's mainly because of the community and how perfect the server files were. I've started to dislike Private servers (especially WoW) recently due to the fact that the people playing the private ones are missing out on so much by not playing official and it's depressing that they put up with that level of "quality".
Low chance of that working. Nowadays, so many people have played high rate servers that once they get in to a low rate they get too impatient to level and just switch back to a high rate. Take MU online servers for example. You can go in to the ad section and the only threads in there that even get a decent amount of replies are the ones that have an experience rate of 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, and even 99,999. People play those servers, then when they play a low rate they get upset because they can't level up off of one kill each level.
Private servers are just becoming more and more pointless. The only successful servers now are the ones that have been around for a long time or they are private servers for a game never hosted before, like that Anarchy server in the ad section. The only reason it's going to be successful as a low rate is because it's a new game.
Meh i kinda got tired of PS i used to have a ritme of changing to another game in a week or less, but then i tryed FFXI and been there for an year and half and i'm lovin it. Playing a PS and playing a p2p server is totaly diferent.
Some game quality can be improved upon in a private server and made to be fun. The perks of usually any private server, is that you can adjust the XP and drop ratios.. then again, thats the bad part. Bringing back WoW servers.. any that get recognition nowadays are set at 99999x exp and new players rush in, can max out in an hour.. and then theres no sense of adventure.. its just BOOM, heres some hand fed top of the line euquipment, max level, best skills, bajillions of gold.. and theres nothign else to do but kill people.
I've always been about a slow steady grind.. but not somethign someone who has no life can take advantage of and be a theoretical"god" in-game.
I looked into RAN private servers a while back but gave up when all I found was shite.
if it were down to me id have private servers at 5x at the most. the official servers have their own exp rates for a reason...to keep everything challenging.
To be honest, EVE is one game that woudl benefit only from starting out with higher stats... you wouldnt need to touch much else.. Increase training time speed, and thats all that woudl make a private server enjoyable. I for sure would love to see starting out with 3 or 4 times the stats.. would make it so fun! :-D
ive managed to get the server wokring and stuff but its connectability is shit, soon as someone else connects to it it crashes. was pretty fun flying round in a titan. makes my official server ship only a handful of pixels long. soon as that emu is released im hosting it. 1x rates ofcourse.

yeah, its a little confusing to start but once you get into it is pwns all other games.

Well I made a gaming company, Hiring lots of staff lately. We are going to have high quality 24/7 Servers ( Definite ) And a few original games.
I still don't get why a few people couldn't start about 10-15 priv servs per game and have everyone go into them, it would balance alot out since there wouldn't be thousands of servers that aren't even worth going into... Take RZ priv servs for example, there is thousands of users a day that use this forum just think if all these people were in RZ servers or something like that.
The server would overload :P If everyone member of RZ joined one of the servers for one of RZ private servers, i don't think there a server that could hold that much, atleast correctly
Yes but that would make it so the coders could make the servers better to hold more people. If retail can only have a few servers for players we should be able to do the same thing if not better!
run 10 instances of the same server, and have each server communicate with one anouther, then place the 10 instances on different machines,
then have the auth server direct connections to the machine with the least load at the time.
problem solved, this is similar to how its done by official servers...altho this is a very basic way of putting it
Private servers forget one very important aspect of a MMORPG the Massive part. MORPGs are never fun. To be honest only around 5 private servers in all of the MMO-genre still deliver a massive amount of people making it fun. It is not fun playing with a handful of people. That is the main cause of private server failure. They lack the players needed to play the game accurately
The reason I left the private server realm is because I was sick and tired of only seeing 10 people in Giran, Lineage 2, and 20 people in Lorencia, if I played MU.

Honestly If there was a private server with Giran filled up that much daily, then I would join in a heartbeat.
