    Recommend me a phone

My dad's birthday is coming up and he desperately needs a new mobile phone. He isn't exactly a 'gadget' man so I'm not looking for anything high-end; looking at around the $200 USD mark.

Let me know if there's anything you would specifically recommend. Not going on a plan though, so don't recommend anything to do with Apple or Blackberry.

Been using my Nokia 5800 for almost a year now and can't find a single flaw with it, so considering getting him 1 as well but at the same time i also want to go with something different. Also considering a Sony Ericsson X10 mini.

I have had the Sony Ericsson W760a for about a year now and I love it. Slide phone, durable, and thin. I love it

I agree with either of those.

    Re: Recommend me a phone

It depends what exactly your looking for
    - touch screen or no touch screen
    - qwerty keyboard
    - internet and wifi
    - a light phone
    - a good phone with battery life
    etc.
I've experienced iPhone4 and it would give you a run for your money
Postive : you can store a hell lot of stuff e.g. movies, apps, games and songs
touchscreen, fun to play with, relatively new, light, cool keyboard, wifi + internet
Cons : it's pretty expensive, it's expensive to unlock, battery life is shit, apps are expensive, touchscreen causes problems, dirty afterawhile
but if your dad is not a gaming/gadgety/music person, then I don't suggest iPhone
I say Nokia E71 would be a good phone too, it's good, has internet and wifi, good keyboard, good and easy functions and good themes and also GPS :)

    Re: Recommend me a phone

Like i said, it's not going on a plan, so that scraps out iPhones and Blackberry's. I also personally hate the android OS, so I'm steering clear of HTC's as well.

I see no use for an iPhone either, i have an iPod touch and after jailbreaking it i simply restored it back to factory settings. I found it to be useless and annoying to use. Over-hyped clearly by idiots who have never used a proper phone before.

I was looking at the Nokia E71 (my brother also has one, but he is stuck on a plan), that may be the right phone for him. ATM it's a toss-up between the E71, the 5800, the 6700 slide, and the Sony Ericsson C510.

    Re: Recommend me a phone

Depends on how technically inclined he is and how old he is.

Seeing that he should be quite old, you probably would not want to get him a phone with a touchscreen or something too small.

The X10 mini is HORRIBLE imo, small and very useless looking. It probably suits a very, very niche market, and that definitely would not suit ur dad. Plus it's android.

The Iphone is actually a great "dumb" smartphone (one that people who are not technically inclined can easily use), Android is definitely out of the picture since its a little confusing at times.

I'll say go for a simple Nokia or a Sony Ericsson one.

I have a Sony Ericsson, which my uncle used to use, then passed to my cousin for a while, then passed back to me, before coming to me for temporary use while my phone is getting serviced. Let me tell you that the model (W810i) is and ABSOLUTE TANK. It has withstood countless drops and has lasted over ~4 years. My friend used to have one and even worked after it went swimming

So yeah, a phone with no touchscreen is probably a good direction if your dad is not that technically inclined.

    Re: Recommend me a phone

Yea I'm not after something advanced or with an amazing list of features.

    Main things it needs are:
    - Good battery life
    - Able to tank at least heroic dungeons (lol)
    - Nice large screen
    - Fast interface, no lag
    - 3G compatible
    - SD card slot

By the 2nd point i meant that it needs a metal casing, not plastic. It will need to survive a fair few knocks... you now how old people are lol.

I use a Sony Ericsson Satio™ (U1i) and I feel it's great. It's got the features that you listed + a 12.1 MP cam. I personally wouldn't recommend Nokia since my dad and I have had terrible experiences with it. We gave up Nokia phones and it feels pretty good tbh. Sony Ericsson is most user-friendly imo.

Get to know more about it, here:

Although I must point out, Sony products use specific accessories. What I'm trying to get at is that your regular micro SD card wont work, you have to buy an M2 card and they're quite expensive for the capacity. And if you want an audio out slot (for headsets and such), then you have to buy a separate cord. Also, beware of the chargers, the one that comes from Sony easily breaks (the pins), so it's best to buy a 3rd party one

There probably is more, but that's all the things I got for mine

The included M2 card should be sufficient for an old man to store a few songs and some pictures taken by the phone.

The phone package should include the handsfree wire which you need to use a 1.8mm audio plug.

I have like 4 chargers, all original and none has broken yet.

Sorry Rice, didn't mean to be so mean, but... yeah

I see your nonsense and raise that with a 3,5mm audio jack (that's standard), a micro sd card slot and a usb charger.

By now all the smartphones come with this stuff, memory stick is dead, the only players left are SD and CF and CF is only used for high end larger stuff like camera's and such (and I don't mean your crappy compact camera's and such, I mean quite a few DSLR models). The audio jack is quite normal aswell, people don't want all the different plugs anymore, especially since you can use the 3,5mm connection for both normal headphones and headsets (with mic..), ofcourse they are different, but there is no need for a different connection anymore and yeah chargers is the same story, it's all getting more and more standard, the EU even has laws coming up that demands a standard charger plug.

Sorry to say, Sony has decided to be an ass and continue on with the M2 card, the micro-memory stick equivalent of the micro-SD card.

Mine came with but a phone and a crappy charger. M2 and audio plug + headset cost extra. I don't know if i got scammed or something, but just saying, I had to buy all the accessories. (Except the charger which broke in a matter of a day or so.

Sorry to sa... wait I'm not sorry to say... Anyhoo, seeing as my X1 has all the stuff I mentioned before and seeing as the X10 that that Rish was talking about has all those things aswell, I really couldn't care about those cheap as phones.
On a side note, I would love to see which phones etc (if they would start using it again camera's etc would be equipped with them aswell) have been released in the past 6-12 months that actually uses their own crap.

No you probably just bought a cheap ass model that has hardly anything included with it. I got a simple Nokia here aswell that only came with a charger and a 512mb micro sd, whereas my X1 came with ofcourse a usb charger, headset (good one aswell, nearly as good as my sennheiser's) and a 4gb micro sd card, ofcourse it was pretty much the most expensive phone on the market at the time.

Sony announced on June 1, 2009 that M2 support in Sony Ericsson phones would be dropped in favor of microSD.
Seems like I need to keep up with times

And Rice, all phones (including cheap ass ones that you can buy at 7-11 for like 59 dollars) comes with a charger, a puny memory card and handsfree here in Singapore AFAIK.
