Too bad. -_-
I should start lowjacking my valuable things, and installing RAT software on my devices so if they are stolen that I can easily control them remotely, take pictures, get IP addresses, log keystrokes etc. Steal my machine: get busted by police and humiliated online when I reveal the weird-ass kind of porn you look at.
Sucks, but that's what insurance is for.
Not many people have the pocket change to splash out £1200 for a decent gaming rig. £1200 is more than I earn monthly, I'm a college student and I earn next to nothing but I live with my parents and thus get supported by them financially, without them I would be living on the streets, Later eduction, financially will break you if you don't have family/friend support. I know once I have the qualifications I can get a good job providing there around.
And being in a hole of debt after being robbed isn't funny.
And all this shit about insurance... You don't expect to get robbed and you shouldn't get robbed, thus you shouldn't get blamed for not getting insurance for theft. All my stuff is covered by my parents home insurance.
You don't expect to get sick either, but you get insurance for that. You're pretty much fucked if you get something serious while not having health insurance. That's the whole point of insurance, it ensures you that someone's got your shit covered when something bad happens. Would you still say the same if your house got robbed and they took all your stuff, only to find out your parents don't have any insurance ? You'd be pretty mad I'd say...
you need to invest on home webcams to record stuff. there are some cheap and can be accessed/stream online.
Really sorry to hear that old friend. There's been a few recent robberies that happened nearby and to a couple friends. Guess it's the season change affecting people. Hope you get everything sorted out and nothing else goes wrong.
C.
There's rarely any kind of robbery where I live, once a year (if that), so I don't exactly know what you're feeling.. But thinking about losing the stuff I worked hard to obtain (just recently bought a Tablet and immediately installed anti-theft software) I can somewhat imagine. Best of luck mate, hope everything sorts out alright!
Heh thanks guys. After 2 weeks without net or games i had stopped thinking about them all together. I'm glad i gave my 2nd M11x to my brother, he just gave it back so I've at least got a PC to use.
We have absolutely every insurance other than home contents. I'm living with my dad and he doesn't really have anything worth insuring so that's why he never got it. They stole his backup laptop he left at home, took 2 Johnny Walker Gold label bottles which were 30+ years old, and another one i had engraved for him for fathers day. They also took his external HDD which he had all of his photos backed up to, and the laptop they took had the originals. His stuff was all sentimental, there is no insurance which can cover that.
I got my PC on credit because i could. The cost of the PC is 2 weeks wages for me, paying for it was never a problem i just couldn't be bothered saving money to buy it. I was mostly bummed about my laptop because I had wanted it for so long and got a great deal on it. They're now discontinued so finding another Soft-touch cherry-red M11x R3 is going to be near-impossible.
Have been thinking about a wireless webcam setup but if they steal the PC it's streaming to then they'll be pointless. The ADSL here is also too shit to set them up to upload to the cloud.
Thats why you build a mini server and hide it away in a closet or behind a large appliance.
Not really. All you'll be doing is recording video, do all you really need is a mediocre system with a large HDD. You can get a 4tb drive on newegg today for $150 on sale, recording nothing but 1280x720 video with no sound you'll hardly need to clean it out.
You could even just go with a DVR but personally I'd set up a linux box with a script to automatically organize in to folders by date and compress the files in to larger folders every week to save even more space. You could rig it up with USB extension cables and end up spending somewhere around $100-150 for 4 HD webcams with cable long enough to run securely back to the box if you want to be cheap.
/experience. Had a fun project with a friend, this is exactly what I ended up doing in her house. Salvaged a few older PC parts to save money. I cut a hole down from her attic and set up the server on top of one of her air ducts, no one breaking in to the house will ever even think of something like that. I ran the wires along the top of the air duct and cut out holes in the wall right next to the cameras. One room has two cameras, both behind two-way mirrors on the wall on opposite sides of the room (mirror in the bedroom on a dresser and one coming from the bathroom). Server management is done via ssh and the webcam streams are able to be accessed wirelessly via lan with WAN access to toggle through the cameras.
I think the entire project was only $600 out of pocket and that included buying necessary tools. She has had people break in twice before, both times stealing $2,500~3,000 worth of jewelry and other items. Good news is she actually caught a guy on the cameras and put him in jail, no issues since.
