Morals, fuck yeah!
Well its my opinion, its illegal go to *************** they got shut down by the federal goverment. Continue if you like prison. I heard they got shit!
Yeah, because companies are going to jail a bunch of 13-year-olds because they're running some twatty wee pserver that doesn't even come up on the radar of these dev companies. I'm sure everyone is shutting down and shitting themselves.
A lot of private servers aren't illegal, but if you want to go against emulation then this isn't the place to state your point.
There are several factors you have to keep in mind when you discuss private servers, their players and payment.
Some private servers get set up because the official lack the things that make the game fun, this can be a stable community, older files in which the game was more fun (some games get worse with updates), newer files, because official doesn't get updated, adding of events etc etc. All of these factors can play a small or even a big role in creating a private server.
MentaL together with Johnyl1 started with a Mir 2 server, partially because I'm sure they would like it do to their own thing, but also because the official server sucked balls, they promised a update for years before it finally happened and by the time it did, RaGEZONE was already 2 updates further. That's what made RZ popular in the first place, because we offered content that the official servers didn't. Add to that, that the leveling is awfully slow in most games, even though most of the fun in games is endgame, very few games have really succeeded in making things before that fun, it's mostly just a grind of weeks or even months before you can really start playing the game.
Then there is the players, some players love a huge server, other people prefer a smaller server, a server where they have more influence in what happens and where it's much easier to contact a GM to make suggestions or anything like that.
I played the official Mir 2 server and even though I was there for quite a while, I didn't really know many people, the server was filled with lots of people and the forums was quite busy. Eventually I did became pretty well known, but even then, it never had the personal touch that RZ did have.
And then there is payment. Simple fact is that a lot of teenagers play the private servers, while some do it purely for the reasons above, most don't, especially the more hardcore players have very little going on in their life, due to that they usually don't have much or any money.
Now you could say that they are taking away money from the developers and all, but like with the music industry, most of them wouldn't be paying for it if it wasn't free.
Fact is that very few people who have the money would play private servers purely from a financial point of view, they either just play official, or a private because they consider a better alternative. That it's free is just a added bonus.
So should we stop? Na. These companies should learn from these private servers, see what they are doing to make them more appealing. I play WoW official myself, if there is one thing that I really dislike, that except for the extremely standard programmed events which usually involves some type of grind, they have no events at all. That's what most official servers miss, a personal touch, now obviously you don't want events that will mess up the game, but some things can be safely done without giving people a unfair advantage.
So yeah, when there is a proper private server out there of your favorite game, that runs smooth and gives you more exp so that you don't have to grind as much, and has events and all that, then it's quite normal that you choose to play on them, regardless of the money.
Nah - but Private servers generally suck. I've not played on one since RYL a couple of years ago.
And lets stop using bit torrent while we're at it. We must all embrace a clean and ethical internet!
I'm just going to point out the fact that alot of people I've seen go to private servers go because they either get bored with the real thing, don't wish to pay for everything or simply wish for a different way of playing the game, I agree if your making money of a server you should be shutdown but if your taking donations to support the server then I see nothing wrong. Besides most people don't donate and it's hard to pay so much a month to keep a VPS
You+this thread=lol'd
Have a nice day :D.
if you think its wrong and you shouldnt do it, you shouldnt do it.
The thraed started asked this question while he had a development thread for lastest MapleStory version, which failed because it was a fake development, lol.
On topic: No, we shouldn't.
Still using someone's work to benefit off...
It's like someone's stolen your car, and then spent awhile finding a buyer to sell it - it's the same principle.
How would you like that? Not mind because the theif spent his time looking for said buyer ? Afterall, that theif needed the money to make a living too!
Except that with a stolen car the person you stole it from doesn't have it anymore.
In this case it was duplicated and the original creators didn't do enough to appeal to game to those people, if someone else modifies that in any kind of way, so that those people do enjoy it, then I don't mind, because at that point that person isn't so much benefitting from the original creators work, but the work he/she has put in it.
This isn't like downloading music and selling it, it's hosting a server, managing a community, creating events etc, that's where the work is, that's what is being rewarded, if it would be vanilla (as in the same as the original) then no one would bother to play a unofficial server, so they must be doing something right to get people to pay them instead of the official one.
Now you might argue that it's still wrong, but if you think that, then you really should find yourself a new site, because the difference between a private server that just runs and doesn't make any money, and a server that is so well run and organized so they make some money, is that in the latter they spend lots and lots of time improving it, and that gets rewarded, not the files, not the game itself, but the work they put in it.
The 'pirates' of today are the ones who are going to power the industry tomorrow.
Thousands of kids learn to program by messing about with server files.
So, and who brought you to stop ALL those private servers?
So, Lloyd Korn made an account on ragezone huh?
