In some (most?) of those cases there is something to be gained as a result. Torture of chickens -- more chicken meat. Scientific discovery, etc. Overpopulation in some areas? Either moving them away or putting them down in a humane manner to alleviate the problem, not holding their legs, bashing their heads against a wall, setting them on fire, or suffocating them, etc.
In these cases, it's just senseless and psychopathic. If they simply don't want the cats, just let them go outside. At least then they have a chance to live if they're capable. The reason these animal cruelty issues cause such anger is because there's no real good reason for it. It seems to be the intentional harm of an innocent and defenseless animal for no reason other than twisted psychopathy. There's a reason this is generally one of the major signs that someone is to be a murderer and/or serial killer in life, and someone this mentally unstable should probably be labeled as insane and held somewhere or given to the mob.
