And, Bill Gates, ftw.
What's with the dramatic smart-ass comment?

Re: To Whom Do You Give Thanks?
Don't know, just giving my opinion. Not trying to start a flame war here. Wonderful that you give yourself thanks, it's just that I'd give my parents thanks as well, but you are entitled to your own opinion.

Re: To Whom Do You Give Thanks?
Man, it really bugs me when people say "without your parents you wouldn't be here." Obviously, I mean come on. But why are we grateful that they gave us life? Is life really that meaningful? You live, you work a shit job, you beat your wife, your kids hate you. The ones who surpass that are the lucky ones. The term "life" is overrated.

Respect and gratitude for the roles played by others in getting you to where you are now is an admirable character trait and a sign of maturity. Self-congratulation is just the opposite.

If it's that obvious, then it's obvious to give them credit. Sorry, I forgot it's against the law around here to give an opinion different from everyone else. *Shrugs*

I do agree with self-gratitude being immature. But the truth is that I have little to thank the people around me for. The happiest moments of my life are the ones I spend alone. Isn't happiness the meaning of life?

But there has to come a point where it just gets meaningless. If you are going to thank your parents, then what about their parents? and the rest of your ancestors. For that matter what about all the people who had effects on their lives in order for them to meet and procreate. My gran and grandpa met because of WW2, should I be thankful for those who started it? Without that war there is 0 chance I would have been born. I doubt there are many of us here who would be the same without the wars of history, should be all be thankful for those who started them?
I'm thankful for moral discussions...

That's an unrealistic and hyperbolic interpretation of what I said. I think you're being contentious for the sake of contention now.

Are you saying your ancestors have no effect n how your life turned out? I think you are be rather conceited if you really thought my argument was hyperbolic. Of course I was being contentious, like I said I do like moral discussions. I'd rather make you think about how greatful you really are of how you turned out.
If you could stop billions of lives being lost in each and every war from the passed, but at a cost of murdering everyone who currently lives, would you? It's a similar question imo, and one which I believe is very difficult to answer. Many people say if they had a time machine they would go back in time and kill Hitler, personally I think it would be a bad idea.
But I guess this is going way off topic now. I just think you need to realise who you are being grateful of by your comment. Clearly by thinking it's unrealistic you haven't thought it through.

It is hyperbolic. Nowhere in my post did I suggest anybody should show personal gratitude toward each and every factor that contributed toward their existence. That's ridiculous, and you're putting words in my mouth with things like your first sentence above. What I suggested was that a general appreciation for the fact that you didn't get here on your own, and acknowledgement that there were many factors at play in bringing about your personal situation, are decent qualities to have. Your time travel hypotheticals were unwarranted.

Why limit yourself to only specific people, surely existing is the most important thing to be thankful for anyway. Sure you could be thankful toward a teacher for urging you into a career option, or a famous person for inspiriting you. I personally believe neither of those examples would matter if you didn't exist in the first place. Frankly it is conceited to be thankful for one group of people (those you know) while disregarding all influence past generations have had on your life.
Maybe it's just the view that being thankful to passed generations dilutes those that you feel really have had a large effect on your life. All I'm saying is you shouldn't disregard those who came before you.

You're still putting words in my mouth. What part of "a general appreciation for the fact that you didn't get here on your own, and acknowledgement that there were many factors at play in bringing about your personal situation" implies gratitude only toward specific people? If anything it implies the opposite; the operative word being 'general'. There was nothing even remotely 'specific' about my statement, in fact it was entirely open-ended.
