i go for c or c++ since almost every web, and software out there are based in somewat c
exg. java, php, java script, activeX, html...etc....etc...oh and it's a nice toy 2 play with memory can do very crazy stuff
EDIT: VB is based on Basic wich camed with eralier MS-DOS and VB is vectorial based, easy 2 learn and 2 make lil aplications, but if you r interested in learning how programimg started and how it works, and it's "philosophies" and methods of work go all the way for pascal

My view:
VB - simple
C++ - able
I don't think VB is even "easier" than C after you get the very basics. When you compile your first .exe you can congratulate yourself for picking the better one, cause by then (you get there in less than a day) you know you're already past the difficulties (relatively).
